How to Use Fabric Softener Efficiently with Your Washing Machine

It is recommended to follow the dosage instructions on the fabric softener package to ensure you are using the right amount for optimal efficiency and effectiveness.

Using too much or too little fabric softener is not advisable. Finding the right balance helps you make the most of your fabric softener and detergent, while also conserving water and electricity.

Select the appropriate washing mode for your laundry to minimize water and electricity consumption. Fabric softener should be added during the final rinse cycle to ensure maximum fabric softening and fragrance retention. There is no need to use fabric softener every time you wash.

If you run out of detergent, fabric softener can be used as a substitute as it also has cleaning properties. However, it is important to use the correct amount and not too frequently to avoid wasting electricity and water.

Many fabric softeners have water and energy-saving features, so look out for these when choosing one for your washing machine.

A Guide on How to Use Fabric Softener with Your Washing Machine

For Washing Machines with a Fabric Softener Compartment

If your washing machine has a detergent compartment, check if it also has a fabric softener section. This is usually the smallest compartment and often marked with a star or other symbol by the manufacturer.

Using fabric softener with this type of washing machine is simple. Before starting the machine, pull out the fabric softener compartment and fill it with the recommended amount of softener. The machine will automatically add the softener to your clothes after the washing cycle is complete.

For Washing Machines Without a Fabric Softener Compartment

If your washing machine does not have a dedicated fabric softener compartment, you can wait until the washing cycle is finished and then pause the machine. At this point, you can add the fabric softener before the final rinse cycle begins.

It is not advisable to pour fabric softener directly onto your clothes as it may cause stains and discolouration, especially on light-coloured garments. Instead, dilute the softener with a little water and then add it to the machine.

If your machine does not allow mid-cycle additions and does not have a fabric softener compartment, consider using a 2-in-1 product that acts as both detergent and softener. Add this to the machine before starting the wash cycle.

When the machine is about to start the second rinse cycle, you can pause it, add the fabric softener, and then resume the cycle to allow the softener to absorb into the clothes.

Tips for Longer-Lasting Fragrance

Increase the amount of fabric softener when washing blankets and comforters: Due to the thick material and less frequent washing, it is harder to retain the fragrance in these items. Soaking them in more softener helps the fragrance permeate the fabric. Use about two caps of softener for one set of bedding.

Avoid excessively high temperatures: While hot water can disinfect clothes, it can also cause colours to fade and fragrance molecules to break down and evaporate. Opt for cold or warm washes to prolong the fragrance.
