In 1998, a severe drought hit Thanh Thuy district in Phu Tho province, causing immense hardship for the local residents due to a lack of water for daily use. Mr. Phan Ngoc Thanh (DOB: 1960) took it upon himself to address this challenge by hiring people to drill deep into the earth.
Even today, Mr. Thanh proudly recalls the feat achieved by that drill 27 years ago, which led to a tourism boom in his hometown.
Mr. Thanh narrates how, after about two days of drilling, water started gushing out from the ground. The initial odor was unpleasant, and the water was murky. However, as they continued to drill deeper, he discovered a source of clear and hot water.

“When we discovered the hot water, some of us living nearby decided to try bathing and soaking in it. We felt incredibly refreshed and energized after the bath,” Mr. Thanh reminisced.
Word about the hot water source spread quickly through the village. Subsequently, many locals started drilling their own wells, and a hot mineral bathing service industry emerged. In the early 2000s, what started as a few small-scale households offering these services expanded rapidly to include dozens of establishments.

News of this unique water spread far and wide, attracting people from all over to experience it for themselves.
According to research conducted by scientists, Thanh Thuy boasts a hot mineral water reserve of over 20 million cubic meters, containing various trace elements, including the rare element Radon. The water temperature ranges from 37-53 degrees Celsius.
This God-sent gift of nature has generated significant tourism revenue for Thanh Thuy district, amounting to thousands of billions of VND. According to statistics from the People’s Committee of Thanh Thuy district, the hot mineral water is the primary tourism attraction in the area.
The district’s tourism and service revenue has been steadily increasing year after year, with remarkable growth. Specifically, in 2023, the revenue reached 520 billion VND, and in 2024, it soared to 780 billion VND.
From makeshift baths to five-star resorts
Recognizing the value of this precious water resource, the tourism services centered around hot mineral water in Thanh Thuy district have continuously been upgraded and improved.
Mr. Vu Duc Kien, Head of the Culture and Information Office of Thanh Thuy district, shared that in 1982, the 303 Geology Team discovered the hot mineral water source in Thanh Thuy. However, it wasn’t until 16 years later, with Mr. Phan Ngoc Thanh’s drill, that the hot mineral bathing services in Thanh Thuy truly flourished.
According to Mr. Kien, almost all visitors to the area indulge in the hot mineral bathing services. He attributes the water as one of the primary reasons tourists are drawn to the district.
Recalling the period between 2008 and 2014, Mr. Kien mentioned that there were dozens of establishments offering makeshift hot mineral bathing services. However, with the introduction of legal frameworks and mineral utilization permit requirements, the district decided to collaborate with enterprises to elevate the bathing services to a higher standard, integrating them with luxury resorts.

With this new direction, several prominent enterprises have invested in developing luxury resorts, transforming the face of local tourism. Currently, there are six large enterprises providing high-end resort services in Thanh Thuy district, with a total investment of nearly VND 8,000 billion across an area of approximately 124 hectares.
According to surveys, the villa-style resorts are a popular choice for families during weekends and holidays, with each villa accommodating around 10-12 guests.
Mr. Nguyen Hoang Duc, a native of Hanoi, shared that he has been visiting Thanh Thuy for over ten years to enjoy the hot mineral water. However, when he returned during the early days of 2025, he was amazed by the transformative changes in the local tourism landscape.
Mr. Vu Duc Kien, Head of the Culture and Information Office, is optimistic that in the future, the district will attract even more investment projects combining resorts with hot mineral bathing services. This will provide visitors with enhanced options and an elevated experience when they visit Thanh Thuy.
