The Scent Method

Rice weevils have a keen sense of smell, so you can use this to your advantage. First, gather some garlic and spices such as cloves and peppercorns, and a disposable face mask. Cut one end of the mask with scissors.

Next, place the garlic and spices inside the mask and secure it with the mask’s tie.

Then, place the mask in your rice container. The strong aroma of the spices will repel the weevils. This method is simple yet effective.

The Freezing Method

Rice weevils often come from the rice itself, so to slow down their reproduction, try the freezing method. Place your rice in a sealed plastic bag and put it in the freezer for 48 hours. The low temperature will kill the eggs and weevils, effectively preventing their growth.

However, if your rice already has weevils, you must remove them before using this method.

Using Alcohol

The strong smell of garlic can be off-putting to you and your family when cooking rice. Instead, try using alcohol. Place a glass of alcohol in your rice container, making sure the rim is higher than the rice level. About 50g of alcohol is enough, and there’s no need to cover it. Alcohol has disinfectant properties and evaporates quickly, leaving the natural aroma of the rice intact.

Using Salt

Sprinkling a small amount of salt into your rice container can also be effective. Weevils dislike salt and will look for ways to escape. However, be careful not to overuse salt, as it can make your rice taste salty and more susceptible to moisture.

Using a Hair Dryer

Spread your rice evenly on a flat surface and use the heat from a hairdryer to dry it out. If you don’t have a hairdryer, you can take advantage of sunny days to sun-dry your rice. The high temperature will force the weevils to the surface, where you can easily pick them out and dispose of them.

Lastly, manually eliminate the weevils by burning them or using insecticides. Do not throw them into the trash together, as they may crawl out and find their way back to your rice if they’re still alive.
