Eating expired food can be quite dangerous for your health, that is something everyone understands. Therefore, before buying or consuming any food, our habit is to check if it is still within its expiry date. Most food items have an expiry date, however, there are some items that you don’t have to worry about because you can still consume them after several years of purchasing them.
Rice

The optimal temperature for storing rice is 4.5 degrees Celsius or lower. It is recommended to store rice in a food-grade plastic container (PETE type) or in a glass jar. According to a study conducted by Dr. Jana Darrington, under these conditions, rice can be stored for up to 30 years without losing its taste and nutritional value. The study was conducted on two types of rice: brown rice (rice obtained by soaking raw rice in hot water or steam, then drying it, and subsequently processing it through various processing stages such as milling, grinding, and polishing) and polished rice.
Soy sauce

Soy sauce can be safely stored for at least 3 years, even after the bottle has been opened. The shelf life of soy sauce in a sealed bottle is even longer, but it depends on factors such as the type of soy sauce, the method of production, the quality, and the storage temperature.
For example, high-quality soy sauce is made through a natural fermentation process, which usually takes several months to 2 years. Only this type of soy sauce can be stored for more than 3 years. That’s why you should be cautious with soy sauces that use chemicals to expedite the fermentation process.
Dried kidney beans

Researchers from Brigham Young University have found that after 30 years of storage, dried kidney beans change their shape but all samples are still acceptable for consumption in emergency situations. They concluded that dried kidney beans, as well as other types of beans, can be stored for at least 30 years.
Salt

Salt is a mineral, not a product, which is why it cannot spoil. Of course, salt can absorb moisture from the air and become lumpy over time. However, salt is still salt. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that iodine in salt only lasts for about 1 year. During this time, iodine tends to evaporate, but salt can still be used as regular table salt.
White vinegar

White vinegar is another product that has no expiration date, but you should ensure proper storage conditions. If you want to keep vinegar for an extended period, the best way is to store it in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, away from heat sources.
Sugar

Similar to salt, sugar can have a long shelf life for an extended period, especially when stored in an airtight container. Even if sugar absorbs moisture from the air and becomes clumpy, it still doesn’t lose its quality.
Honey

Honey is a special food that can last indefinitely due to its chemical compounds that make it difficult for bacteria to thrive. Furthermore, if you purchase a jar of unopened honey, be assured that it doesn’t spoil because it hasn’t come into contact with water or air.
While exploring one of the ancient Egyptian pyramids, archaeologists discovered several jars of honey. The average lifespan of the honey was between 2,000 to 3,000 years, and it was still edible; the archaeologists even tasted it. Several years later, a 5,500-year-old honey jar was found in Georgia.
