In a small experiment conducted by the YouTube channel MikesCarInfo, a FLIR thermal imaging camera was used to measure the temperature of Toyota Highlanders of different colors when parked in the sun in a parking lot.
The surface temperature of the black car reached a staggering 159°F (70.5°C). In contrast, the white Highlander recorded a much cooler 113°F (45°C) under the same conditions.
This demonstrates that choosing a lighter-colored vehicle can result in a temperature difference of over 25 degrees in the same sunny conditions. This, of course, also translates to a cooler interior, despite the cabin being separated from the exterior by insulation and soundproofing materials.

In addition to testing the extremes of black and white, MikesCarInfo also measured the temperatures of light gray and silver cars under the same sunny conditions. The results showed that the light gray car heated up to a similar extent as the black car, reaching 146°F (63.3°C), while the silver car was not far off from the white car, peaking at 129°F (53.89°C).
Furthermore, silver and non-black cars reflect approximately 60% of the sun’s heat, compared to black cars.
In another experiment by Autotrader, two cars, one black and one white, were left in the sun for 20 minutes. The results showed that the interior of the black car reached a sweltering 54°C, while the white car’s interior peaked at a much more comfortable 45°C.
Higher temperatures inside the car can make it uncomfortable for occupants and also affect the durability of interior materials, and may even produce toxic gases. Therefore, choosing a car color that suits the local climate is essential.
For those living in colder regions, opting for a darker-colored car can help keep the cabin warmer. Conversely, in tropical countries like Vietnam, choosing a lighter-colored car will help keep the interior cooler when parking in the sun is unavoidable.
To mitigate the rise in temperature inside the car, you can purchase reflective sun shades or car covers, which are effective solutions when parking outdoors in sunny weather.
