If you don’t have a dryer, your clothes should be hung outside in the sun so that they dry quickly and remain fresh, germ-free and mold-free. Global clothes drying habits have a few differences.
Why do so many foreigners hang their clothes upside down?
Most Vietnamese people hang their clothes to dry from top to bottom, using hangers, the same way that they would wear them. Meanwhile, in many other countries, people are accustomed to hanging some of their clothes upside down, especially jeans, khakis, T-shirts, with the waistband and hems facing downwards.
Why do so many foreigners hang their clothes upside down, and what are the advantages of this method? This “unorthodox” drying technique helps clothes to drip dry and dry more quickly. Using this method, clothes are held in place on the clothesline with clothespins, so the item remains fixed in one spot and won’t blow away in windy conditions.
Another reason for why so many foreigners hang their clothes upside down is that with this method using clothespins on a line, clothes are spread out and don’t bunch up like they would if hung on a hanger. Clothes that are spread out dry faster.
Should you turn clothing inside-out to dry?
Many people are accustomed to turning their clothes inside-out to dry so that they dry more quickly but this habit also has disadvantages. The inside of a garment is what makes direct contact with our skin when we wear it. If you turn it inside-out to dry, the inside can easily become contaminated with bacteria and dirt, which can cause allergies and itching for the wearer.
Moreover, insects and pet hair (especially during mosquito and shedding seasons) can easily collect on the inside of clothes hung this way, which is harmful to the skin, especially for children.
Therefore, you should avoid turning your clothes inside-out to dry. All you need to do is hang them in a dry, airy location and your clothes will still be clean, fresh, and less damaging to your skin.
However, if your clothes are made from special materials like silk, cashmere, wool, light-colored cotton, or denim that fades easily, you should turn them inside-out to dry. In hot, sunny weather, high temperatures will cause clothes made from these materials to fade quickly.
Remember, you shouldn’t hang your clothes in direct sunlight for too long to prevent the fabric from fading prematurely. Before bringing your clothes inside, shake them once or twice to remove dust, then put them away.
How to dry clothes quickly
To dry your clothes quickly, you should try the following:
Wring out excess water before hanging: If you’re washing your clothes by hand, wring out as much water as possible before hanging them to dry.
Avoid hanging clothes on top of each other or hanging them too closely together. Doing so will prevent your clothes from drying evenly, leaving them damp and prone to bacteria and mold growth, which can affect your skin’s health.
Hang your clothes in a dry, airy location, but avoid hanging them in direct sunlight for too long as this can cause your clothes to fade
Do not hang clothes in the kitchen or bathroom, as they will take longer to dry and may absorb unpleasant odors.
