I’m sure everyone has at least once been in a situation where an ATM swallowed their money. In this case, if you stay calm, you may not be able to get your money back.
Why does an ATM not dispense money?
Even though your account has been debited, the ATM does not dispense money, causing inconvenience to users. Although this situation does not happen frequently, it is difficult for users to prevent it because there are no signs to detect early on.
The ATM not dispensing money is considered a “system error,” and there are three main reasons for this phenomenon. The first is an error with the ATM itself. Each ATM is like a computer with its own operating system and is constantly running. During this process, the ATM may encounter software issues that cause malfunctions.
The second reason is a transaction system error on the bank’s side. This error often occurs when the bank has too many transactions at the same time, causing the system to become overloaded. As a result, the information is slow to reach the ATM, leading to issues in executing the command.
The final reason lies with the user. If the money has been dispensed to the money collection area and the user does not withdraw it quickly enough, the ATM will retract the money. Most ATMs have a designated time for cash withdrawal, and if it exceeds that time, the ATM will swallow the money again. The worst case scenario is when the ATM retracts the money, but the system still deducts the funds from your account because it recognizes the transaction as “successful.”
What should you do when an ATM swallows your money?
If an ATM swallows your money, you need to remain calm and deal with the issue. As soon as your money is swallowed, retrieve your bank card immediately to avoid the ATM swallowing it as well. Next, carefully observe the surroundings of the ATM and look for the following information: ATM ID and the bank’s 24/7 hotline number.
Each ATM is numbered and has a hotline to support any issues. Call the hotline immediately and provide specific details about the incident that just occurred. Make sure to provide the accurate transaction time, including the date, hour, and minute. At this point, the bank staff may request some personal information, such as your ID card or passport number, date of birth, etc. Once your identity and the transaction are confirmed, the refund process will take place within 5 to 7 days, excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
If the ATM is located within a bank branch, you can go directly to the branch counter to report the issue you encountered.
