Sometimes, you need to replace the batteries in your watch or TV remote. But if you’re not careful, you might mix up the old and new batteries.
So, other than installing the batteries in devices to test them or using specialized electrical measuring equipment, is there any other trick to tell which batteries are old and which are new? Let’s find out with Bach Hoa XANH below.
A Tip to Check if a Battery is Charged or Discharged
This method is incredibly simple. Just hold the battery about 4-5 cm above a hard, flat surface and drop it vertically. Then, observe the battery’s behavior.
– If the battery bounces, it has lost at least 50% of its energy.
– If the battery doesn’t bounce, it’s new and still has a full charge (over 80% energy remaining).
According to experts, the more depleted a battery is, the higher its bounce will be, and vice versa.
This is because batteries contain zinc, which oxidizes to produce electricity. When a battery is new and unused, the zinc molecules are tightly compressed. So, when dropped from a height, it doesn’t bounce.
In a used battery, the oxidation of zinc forms “bridges” between the molecules, causing the battery to bounce when dropped.
This quick and convenient way to check battery charge levels can be applied to common battery types such as AAA, AA, C, D, and 9V.
We hope that with this quick and easy tip for checking battery charge, you’ll be able to apply it in your daily life whenever you need to. Stay happy!
