Stay Hydrated
As shared by Wendell Porter, a senior lecturer at the University of Florida, providing your body with water is the first and most crucial step to cooling down when you’re feeling hot and fiery.
The temperature of the water is not significant. If your body is experiencing high temperatures and needs to cool down, it cannot do so effectively without adequate hydration, as sweating is the body’s natural cooling mechanism.
Tips to stay cool if your home doesn’t have air conditioning.
Take a Cold Shower
This method helps cool the body by lowering its core temperature. However, it’s important to note that if you’ve been outdoors in the scorching heat, it’s not advisable to shower immediately, as it can be dangerous. Allow your body to cool down a bit before stepping into the shower. To make this experience more refreshing, try using peppermint soap. The peppermint essential oil will activate brain receptors, leaving you feeling more comfortable.
Apply Cold Towels to Your Neck or Wrists
Placing cold towels or ice packs on your wrists or wrapping them around your neck can help cool your body. These areas have blood vessels close to the skin’s surface, so you’ll experience a faster cooling effect.
Use a Box Fan
Position a box fan facing outwards at the window of the room you’re in to blow the hot air out and bring cooler indoor air inside.
Install Blackout Curtains
Blackout curtains help insulate your room and prevent the temperature from rising during the day. Additionally, consider sleeping on breathable bedding to avoid increasing your body temperature.
Cook in the Morning or Use a Slow Cooker Outdoors
On hot days, cooking indoors is not ideal. The heat from stoves and ovens can permeate your entire home. Instead, use a slow cooker to centralize the heat in one area. Alternatively, cook outdoors to release the heat outside.
Indulge in Cold Treats
Enjoying cold treats like ice cream can provide a temporary cooling sensation. However, avoid overindulging if you’re already feeling too warm.
