The Versatile Soap Nut
Soap nuts, also known as bồ kết in Vietnamese, have been traditionally used for laundry, bathing, and shampooing. This is due to their natural antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Soap nuts create a lather similar to soap, and act as a natural cleanser. While their use has declined in recent times, they are still sold annually towards the end of autumn and stored dry for year-round use. Soap nuts are also used by some brands to create natural hair care products.
Additionally, soap nuts are an effective medicinal remedy for treating ailments such as stroke, boils, and scabies. The fruit and spines of the soap nut tree have excellent antifungal properties. In the past, the spines were also uniquely used to extract snails in rural villages. Ingesting the seeds of the soap nut is a traditional method of treating intestinal parasites.
In spiritual and feng shui practices, soap nuts are commonly burned to cleanse spaces, especially during year-end purification rituals. They are believed to ward off evil spirits and are often burned with other herbs or straw to dispel negative energies. Soap nuts are also used to remove bad luck and negative influences after visiting places like hospitals, cemeteries, or prisons. Burning them is also a traditional remedy for relieving nasal congestion.
Superstitions Around Planting Soap Nut Trees
In the past, it was believed that trees or plants in front of a house should bring positive energy. Trees with sharp thorns were considered to emit harmful energy, or ‘killer qi’, which could bring misfortune to the residents. Soap nut trees have numerous sharp, dangerous thorns, and their appearance is quite intimidating. According to feng shui beliefs, planting soap nut trees directly in front of a house could direct this harmful energy towards the home, leading to health issues, family discord, and financial losses.
Moreover, planting soap nut trees in front of a house, especially one with children, could pose a safety hazard. These trees grow tall and may obstruct the view. In the past, tall trees with sharp thorns, or those with negative connotations and names, were avoided in front of homes.
It is recommended to plant trees that symbolize wealth and luck, such as money plants, orange trees, or pomegranate trees. Traditionally, soap nut trees were kept at forest edges or in wastelands solely for their fruits and not planted close to homes. In ancient villages, these trees were usually found in spacious gardens, away from the immediate vicinity of houses.
