Stepping into Vu Thi Thanh Nhai’s (born in 1980, Quang Ninh) house, you will be amazed by the world of flowers and ceramics. The peach blossom branches she arranges are always vibrant and blooming.
“There’s nothing more wonderful than owning a blossoming peach branch during the first days of the new year,” shared Nhai.
With her love for flowers and years of flower arrangement experience, the peach branches in Nhai’s house, whether red or pink, are always in full bloom, gracefully “posing”. This 8X miner generously shared her experience in choosing, arranging, and caring for peach blossoms with VietNamNet. Let’s explore how to select, arrange, and nurture these blossoms to flower on the Lunar New Year’s Day.
How to Choose a Peach Branch
Depending on the location and space where you want to place the flower vase, you can choose a peach branch with a suitable shape. It is important to select a branch with evenly distributed twigs, fresh and healthy, and abundant flowers. A peach branch with many small twigs, plump buds spread evenly from top to bottom, promises a beautiful display.
Nhai shared that for the last three years, she has been displaying peach blossoms during Tet. “Peach blossoms are loved not only for their graceful curves but also their versatility in different spaces, even in small houses. Choosing the right branch is the most important step, whether you buy directly or online. Ensure you select a fresh branch with a sturdy trunk and abundant plump buds,” she said.

How to Nurture the Peach Blossoms to Bloom on the First Day of Tet
According to Nhai, when you bring the peach branches home, keep the original binding, and use a spray bottle to mist the entire branch for about 5-10 minutes to clean the dust and revive the flowers after the transportation from the garden to your house.
Nhai does not burn the roots of the peach branches but uses a small saw to trim the dirty part of the roots. Then, she uses a sharp knife to peel off the bark about 10cm from the roots. For mini peach branches or peach branches with a curved shape, use a knife to split the roots into two or three parts. “This helps the branches absorb more water to nourish the flowers,” she said.
Clean the vase and use clean water mixed with a flower nourishing packet to arrange the flowers. If the weather is cold and the buds are still small, you can mist the branches once or twice a day, add warm water at 40 degrees Celsius to the vase, and hang decorative lights that emit heat to encourage blooming.
If the blossoms show signs of blooming earlier than expected, add ice cubes to the vase. Keep the vase in a wind-protected area to prevent the petals from falling off quickly.
If the peach branches start to wither, and the flowers do not fully bloom, you can “rescue” them by following these steps. First, pour out the water and clean the vase, then refill it with new water – preferably rainwater or alkaline ionized water. Next, take the branches out, clean the roots, and cut off about 10-15cm of the roots before rearranging them. If the branches do not revive after a day, it is best to find replacement branches before the new year arrives.
Tips for Arranging Curved Peach Branches to Create a Graceful Display Without Tipping Over
Large curved peach branches are often challenging to keep straight in the vase. According to Nhai, some small tricks can help when arranging these branches.
A small ceramic pot with a narrow mouth is suitable for curved peach branches, helping to position the roots more firmly. The color is usually a natural brown or one that matches the interior space where the blossoms are displayed. Choose a pot with a size proportionate to the peach branch.
“To keep the branch standing firmly without tying it at the roots, opt for a heavier pot with a narrow mouth, fill it with water, and gently place the branch inside. For added security, you can still tie the upper part of the branch with a thin rope or wire. If the pot has a wide mouth, you can place a brick at the bottom or use white pebbles to stabilize the branch. Avoid using sand as it clogs the water absorption channels, causing the branch to wither quickly,” shared Nhai.
For lightweight blue ceramic pots, Nhai takes advantage of the rim to tie the wire securely without exposing it.
When changing the water in large pots, Nhai uses a hose to siphon the water from the pot to a bucket placed lower. She then refills the vase with clean water and adds a flower nourishing packet to provide extra nutrients to the blossoms, ensuring the flowers remain vibrant and fully bloomed.
