Coffee is more than just a beverage that gives you a quick energy boost; it also offers a host of health benefits.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, black coffee contains insignificant amounts of nutrients like fat, card, protein, and cholesterol. However, it is rich in several compounds that are beneficial to your health. Specifically, 100g of black coffee contains 92mg of potassium, 8mg of magnesium, 0.05mg of manganese, 0.01mg of vitamin B2, and 0.7mg of vitamin B3, along with antioxidants such as caffeine, chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, and n-coumaric acid.
Coffee is a popular beverage, especially among office workers.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) suggests that the nutritional composition of coffee, particularly black coffee without added sugar, can provide numerous health benefits. Regular consumption of coffee can help improve alertness and may also reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, liver cirrhosis, and type 2 diabetes. It can enhance your mood, lower the chances of developing certain cancers, and even aid in weight loss.
Lemon Juice to the Rescue for a Stronger Immune System
Lemons are widely cultivated in Vietnam, and lemon juice is packed with essential nutrients such as protein, glucid, calcium, and potassium. But what sets this fruit apart is its exceptionally high content of vitamin C.
The National Institutes of Health in the United States reports that the juice of one lemon contains approximately 30mg of vitamin C, meeting about 33% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) for men and 40% for women.
Erin Palinski-Wade, a US-based nutrition expert, explains that vitamin C found in lemons can protect cells from damage, aid in collagen production and iron absorption, and bolster the immune system.
Dr. Phung Tuan Giang, Chairman of the Institute for Research and Development of Vietnamese Traditional Medicine, agrees, adding that the high levels of vitamin C and antioxidants in lemon juice can boost the body’s immunity, aid in weight loss, and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

What Happens When You Combine Coffee and Lemon Juice?
Dimple Jangda, an Indian gut health expert, recently shared his insights on the health benefits of combining coffee and lemon juice on the health platform Healthshots.
According to Jangda, coffee contains caffeine, which boosts metabolism and fat oxidation. Lemons, on the other hand, stimulate the metabolic process. Therefore, it is not advisable to consume excessive amounts of coffee with lemon for weight loss purposes.
Citing a recent study, Jangda points out that coffee has the highest antioxidant content among beverages, ranging from 200 to 550mg per cup, surpassing tea and red wine. “Coffee contains chlorogenic acid, and lemons also have antioxidants that can help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the body,” Jangda explains.
Boosting Immunity
Jangda emphasizes that the abundant antioxidants in coffee and the high vitamin C content in lemons make this combination ideal for strengthening the immune system.
Enhanced Nutrient Absorption
The vitamin C in lemons can improve nutrient absorption. Jangda notes that adding lemon to coffee can enhance the absorption of antioxidants and other beneficial compounds found in coffee.
Potential Skin Benefits
According to Jangda, both coffee and lemons are rich in antioxidants, which can have positive effects on the skin. The vitamin C in lemons can improve skin health by combating free radicals and eliminating toxins. Additionally, a 2017 study published in the journal Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry (Japan) found that coffee effectively enhanced skin moisture and barrier function.
Precautions When Mixing Coffee and Lemon
– Mix coffee with a small amount of hot water and add a splash of lemon juice. Stir well and enjoy it while it’s still warm. Note: Do not add lemon to coffee if it contains milk, as this can irritate the stomach lining and cause digestive issues such as indigestion, heartburn, and diarrhea.
– Since both coffee and lemon are acidic, individuals prone to heartburn, stomach irritation, or diarrhea should refrain from consuming this beverage.
– If you have sensitive teeth or gums, avoid mixing coffee with lemon, as it may adversely affect your dental health.
– For those with sleep issues, it is advisable to avoid coffee due to its caffeine content, which can interfere with sleep.
