According to local people, Mount Mat Than is also called Mount Thung (in the Tay ethnic language, it’s Phia Piot) because at the top of the mountain, there is a large hole piercing through its heart, resembling a ‘giant eye’ with a diameter of about 50m at its widest point.

At the foot of the mountain lies a vast valley, surrounded by lakes and small streams. The scenery is said to change with the seasons.

During the dry season (from September to March in the lunar calendar), the valley turns lush with a carpet of young grass, attracting campers and picnickers. In contrast, the rainy season (from April to August in the lunar calendar) transforms the area into a vast, clear blue lake, perfect for boating and fishing.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, visitors are advised to check the weather forecast before their trip and avoid traveling on days with unfavorable weather conditions.

Additionally, visitors can explore nearby attractions such as the Nam Tra waterfall and the Danh stilt house village, known for its unique yin-yang tiled roofs. They can also learn about the local culture and traditions of the Tay ethnic minority group in the region.

“Don’t forget to indulge in some delicious local specialties, including ant egg rice, chestnuts, steamed rice rolls, baked cakes, hill chicken, and black jelly,” suggested Huy.

According to Huy, the journey to Mount Mat Than is relatively easy. The two most popular routes are either through Ma Phuc Pass from Cao Bang city center or starting from Lenin Creek in Truong Ha commune, Ha Quang district.

The Ma Phuc Pass route is favored by tourists as it is one of the most famous and beautiful passes in Cao Bang.

“There’s a particularly beautiful stretch of road near Ma Phuc Pass, which also serves as a popular photo stop before reaching Mount Mat Than,” Huy added.

At Mount Mat Than, visitors can opt for a day trip and explore on their own or join a guided tour, such as a specialized Cao Bang tour with a 3-day, 2-night itinerary or a 2-day, 1-night option. There are also inter-provincial tours available, combining Ha Giang and Cao Bang.

For those wishing to stay overnight, it is recommended to bring specialized camping gear or rent tents from nearby accommodation providers, with prices ranging from 400,000 to 600,000 VND per person per night.
