In his book, ‘Man’s Search For Ultimate Meaning’, Viktor Frankl wrote, “Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success. You have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to be happy in the meantime. The more you are like this, the more happy you become.” In other words, happiness is not a destination you can reach by chasing it. It is a byproduct of the people and events in your life. So, when you focus on these, happiness will naturally follow.

2. They Embrace Life’s Uncertainty

We can never accurately predict the future, and facing unexpected events is an inevitable part of life. How we approach these unforeseen circumstances will impact our enjoyment of them. By accepting life’s unpredictability, we are better prepared to go with the flow when such events occur, rather than trying to ignore or push them away. Embracing the situation you find yourself in, no matter how surprising, significantly reduces stress, enhances awareness, and helps you find comfort and peace in any circumstance.

3. They Appreciate Life’s Abundance

Happy people tend to “see the glass as half full,” truly appreciating what they have instead of longing for what they don’t. If you’re always thinking about all the things you don’t have, how can you enjoy the richness of your life right now?

4. They Accept Past Events Instead of Dwelling on Them

One of the biggest mistakes the human mind can make is believing it can change the past. Happy people understand that what’s done is done, and there’s no use living in the past. So, there’s no point in spending your precious energy on regrets, anger, or sadness.

5. They Learn From Their Mistakes

The writer Paulo Coelho once said, “A mistake repeated more than once is a decision,” and happy people understand this truth. When they make a mistake, they try to understand it to avoid repeating it. With this learning attitude, they break free from the cycle of regret.

6. They Ask for Help When Needed

For many, asking for help is a sign of weakness. They believe that doing so might lower their status in the eyes of others. Happy people understand that asking for help is actually a sign of strength. It shows you’ve recognized your weaknesses and are open to receiving support. Moreover, asking for help can bring people closer together.

7. They Choose the Right People to Be With

As we gain more life experience, we realize that the type of people we feel closest to and enjoy spending time with can change. However, many try to hold on to old friendships purely for the sake of familiarity and shared history.

If you reach a point where you realize you no longer enjoy being with a person, it’s unwise to try and maintain that relationship. Happy people tend to let go of weakened relationships easily so they can focus more time and energy on those with whom they currently have a strong connection and who they feel deserve their time the most.

8. They Regularly Re-evaluate Their Goals

Achieving a goal is only considered a success if you’re still wholeheartedly committed to it. Happy people take the time to reflect on their goals to ensure they remain aligned with who they are today. You may have planned to buy a house by the age of 30, but if, at 27, you’re content with your current living situation and the pressure of saving for a house is causing unnecessary stress, you can let go of that goal or adjust it to fit your lifestyle and desires better.

Setting goals can be an effective way to achieve what you want, but don’t get caught up in the illusion that once written, goals can’t be changed. It’s pointless to force yourself to pursue a goal that no longer leads you towards happiness.
