Choosing fresh and healthy food for your family can be a challenge, but with these tips from teacher Vu Hien in Hai Phong, you can make informed decisions when it comes to selecting meat, seafood, and produce.

How to Choose Fresh and Delicious Beef and Pork

Look for meat with a bright red color that is slightly sticky due to its moisture and warmth. Fresh meat is elastic and will not dent when pressed with a finger. It should also appear wet. Avoid pork with white spots, as this indicates the presence of rice worms.

What to Avoid:

Do not choose meat that is pale or has red bruises.

Avoid pork with yellow fat and white spots in the muscle fibers, as well as skin bruises, as these are signs of parasitic infection.

How to Choose Chicken

When selecting chicken, beware of skin with a dark yellow color, as this may be due to artificial coloring, or bruises and blood pooling.

If possible, buy live chickens and ask the seller to slaughter and prepare them on the spot. Look for active chickens with reddish-pink combs, smooth and glossy feathers, and bright eyes. If buying pre-slaughtered chickens, choose those with moist skin and reddish-pink or even yellow combs (a dry membrane indicates older meat). Do not buy chickens with bruised skin, as they may be sick or recently deceased.

How to Choose Fresh Seafood

Fresh squid is easily identifiable by its transparent body and firmly attached tentacles. Healthy fish will swim vigorously, have quick eyes, pink gills, and hard scales. Crabs with firm undershells indicate meatiness. Oysters and clams should be slightly open, displaying fresh and shiny colors.

Choosing Delicious Shrimp: Distinguish spoiled shrimp by their curved bodies, which form a circle, unlike the straight or slightly curved shape of fresh shrimp. Avoid shrimp that has discharged mucus or has black legs, indicating spoilage.

To test the freshness of shrimp, hold the head and tail and gently stretch the shrimp. Fresh shrimp will have tight joints between the segments, while those that have been frozen for a long time will have loose joints.

Selecting Vegetables and Fruits

Choose produce with vibrant colors characteristic of the type of fruit or vegetable and free from deformities. It should have a pleasant, typical aroma, free from strange or pungent odors. Whenever possible, buy seasonal produce.

Vegetables: Opt for fresh, undamaged, and unwilted vegetables with crisp leaves and no slime on the stems.

What to Avoid:

Refrain from buying produce with extremely dull or faded colors, as this may indicate poor quality.

Avoid vegetables and fruits with white spots or unusual markings.
