Causes of Dry, Scaly Skin
Winter’s low temperatures and dry air can exacerbate dry skin. In addition, skin conditions tend to flourish during this season. When skin lacks moisture, any damage can become more severe, leading to dryness and flakiness.
Remedies for Dry, Scaly Skin
Moisturize
This is the most important step to combat dry skin. Apply moisturizer at least three times a day—in the morning, at noon, and before bed.
In the morning, follow these steps: facial mist, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen. At noon, wash your face with cool water, then reapply moisturizer and sunscreen. In the evening: Remove makeup, cleanse your face, apply facial mist, serum, and moisturizer, and finally, apply body lotion.
Frequent Facial Mists
The surface of the skin loses moisture quickly in cold climates, causing our skin to dry out faster. Therefore, it is essential to use facial mists regularly to provide immediate hydration and prevent dryness.
Avoid Hot Water
It is best to avoid using hot water to wash your face. High water temperatures can disrupt the skin’s structure, leading to dryness and potentially causing itching, redness, and irritation.
While hot water may feel comforting during dry seasons, it tends to strip the skin of its natural oils, making it drier and more prone to flaking. Instead, opt for cool or lukewarm water, and choose gentle cleansers that do not overly strip the skin of its natural oils.
Be Gentle with Your Skin
When your skin is flaking, you might be tempted to use a washcloth or loofah to scrub it away. However, this can do more harm than good. Instead, gently massage your skin to remove dead skin cells gradually.
If your skin feels itchy, resist the urge to scratch. Instead, soothe the affected area with a cool compress.
Protect Your Skin Outdoors
When venturing outdoors, ensure you adequately protect your skin from the elements. While the sun may not feel as intense during dry seasons, it can still worsen your skin’s condition. Always apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside.
