Toilets are breeding grounds for germs and odors, hence the need for regular cleaning. Typically, households use chemical cleaners and deodorizers, but these products can be expensive and may raise health concerns.

You can easily make your own natural, cost-effective toilet cleaner and deodorizer at home.

Tip for making your own toilet cleaning and deodorizing tablets

Make your own toilet cleaning and deodorizing tablets with simple ingredients.

You will need: 180g baking soda, 50g citric acid (lemon acid, sour salt, etc.), ½ teaspoon vinegar, 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide, 15-20 drops of essential oil of your choice (preferably orange, lemon, or lemongrass). Tools: a tray or silicone ice cube mold, wax paper, spoon, and a spray bottle.

First, mix the baking soda and citric acid in a bowl. Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and cleaner commonly used in households. Citric acid boosts the cleaning power and removes stains.

In a separate bowl, mix the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle. If you don’t have a spray bottle, you can use a spoon to transfer the liquid to the baking soda mixture.

Slowly spray (or spoon) the liquid into the baking soda mixture, mixing as you go.

Then, slowly add the essential oil to the baking soda mixture and continue mixing. Essential oils have antibacterial properties and provide a pleasant fragrance.

Mix the ingredients thoroughly, and then test the consistency by squeezing a small amount in your hand. If it holds together, the mixture is ready for molding. If not, spray a little more water.

Use a spoon to scoop and shape the mixture into small, even tablets. Line a tray with wax paper and place the tablets on it. Alternatively, you can spray a little vinegar and water on the edges of the tablets to enhance adhesion.

You can also pour the mixture into a silicone ice cube tray and press firmly. After a few hours, pop out the tablets and let them air dry on a tray.

Let the tablets dry in a cool, ventilated area for at least four hours or overnight.

Store the dried tablets in a sealed container. Label the container to avoid confusion with other products.

To use, simply drop a tablet into the toilet, let it fizz and work its magic. Depending on the dirtiness of your toilet, you can either flush immediately or scrub with a brush before flushing.
