Coriander, also known as cilantro, is a familiar herb often used in Vietnamese cuisine. It is rich in fiber and contains antibacterial compounds, making it beneficial for gut health and preventing constipation.
If you buy too much coriander and can’t use it all at once, try this storage method to keep it fresh and nutritious for up to a year.
Why Coriander Wilts and Rot Quickly
Coriander has fragile, thin leaves and long stems, making it prone to breakage. Additionally, factors such as weather and temperature can cause moisture loss in the herb. Moreover, soil and bacteria remaining on the roots can proliferate and accelerate rot.
As a result, even when stored in the refrigerator or wrapped in newspaper, coriander tends to have a short shelf life.
How to Keep Coriander Fresh and Last Longer
Properly Wash the Coriander Before Storing
Prepare a clean basin of water and add 1-2 teaspoons of baking soda, adjusting the amount depending on the quantity of coriander. Soak and gently wash the roots, stems, and leaves of the coriander. Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry before storing.
Cold Storage Method
Step 1: Trim the Roots
Before storing, trim the roots and cut the coriander into short sections according to your preferred usage.
Removing the roots and cutting the herb into smaller pieces helps prevent bacterial growth and contamination of the leaves, making it more convenient for cold storage.
Step 2: Store in Airtight Containers
Place the trimmed coriander pieces into airtight glass or plastic containers and store them in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator.
This method will help maintain the freshness and nutritional value of coriander for an extended period.
Step 3: Utilize the Roots
Don’t discard the roots as they can be used to add flavor to broths or soups. Coriander root water is also believed to have benefits for the stomach and spleen. Additionally, it can help detoxify the body, improve bowel movement, reduce itching, and promote blood circulation.
Alternatively, you can tie the roots together and hang them in a dry and well-ventilated area to allow the aroma of coriander to permeate the living space, creating a relaxing and soothing atmosphere.
Short-Term Storage Method
If you don’t need to store the coriander for an extended period, simply wash the excess herb, let it air dry, and then place it in a sealed plastic bag in the freezer. This method can keep the coriander fresh for about two weeks.
When removing coriander from the freezer, avoid consuming it raw or cooking it immediately. Instead, thoroughly wash the herb again before using it to eliminate any potential bacterial growth.
