Grapefruit Peel
The grapefruit peel is rich in essential oils, emitting a pleasant fragrance that can overpower foul odors in the refrigerator. The porous surface of the peel also absorbs and filters out strange-smelling molecules in the air, including those responsible for the unpleasant scent.
Simply place some fresh grapefruit peel in the compartments of your fridge to eliminate odors. Remember to replace the peel regularly to prevent it from rotting.
Similarly, the peels of lemons and oranges also contain abundant natural oils that produce a delightful aroma, helping to neutralize fridge odors. You can leave the peels of these fruits in the fridge for about three days to get rid of any nasty smells.
White Vinegar
White vinegar contains acetic acid, an organic solvent capable of dissolving odorous substances. Therefore, it is an effective tool to neutralize unpleasant smells in your refrigerator. The process is straightforward: pour some white vinegar into a small bowl and place it inside the fridge. The vinegar will gradually evaporate, taking the bad smells with it.
Alternatively, you can dilute white vinegar with clean water. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and spritz it into the nooks and crannies of your fridge, working from the top compartments down. Then, wipe everything down with a dry cloth.
Dried Tea Leaves
Take about 50 grams of dried tea leaves (opt for those infused with floral scents) and place them in a small fabric bag or a disposable paper cup. Put this tea bag in your fridge and leave it there for approximately ten days. The palmitic acid in the tea will absorb the foul odors. Additionally, dried tea leaves help absorb excess moisture in the fridge. After some time, remove the tea and lay it out in the sun to dry before reusing it for odor removal.
Used Coffee Grounds
Used coffee grounds are another effective remedy for eliminating fridge odors. Collect and air-dry the grounds, then place them in a thin fabric bag or a small bowl. Put this in your fridge, and the strong coffee aroma will overpower any unpleasant smells. Maintaining this for a few days should eliminate the odors, leaving a subtle coffee fragrance in the fridge. The used coffee grounds can then be utilized as fertilizer for your plants.
To prevent unpleasant odors in your refrigerator, regular cleaning is essential. Store food separately, preferably in airtight containers or sealed bags. Keep cooked and raw food apart to avoid cross-contamination of bacteria. Discard food that has been in the fridge for extended periods without being consumed.
