A Taiwanese YouTuber, who is also a traditional Chinese medicine doctor, recently made a video pointing out two things people should avoid when using lip balm, or else it could make their lips even drier and more chapped.

1. Don’t apply lip balm directly if your lips are dry

According to the doctor, about 90% of people use lip balm incorrectly by applying it directly to dry lips. He explains that when lips are dehydrated, applying lip balm won’t be able to “lock in” any moisture. The correct way is to drink water before applying lip balm. This can keep your lips and body hydrated from the inside out, and then the application of lip balm can effectively lock in that moisture.

Applying lip balm to dry, chapped lips won’t help lock in moisture.

2. Don’t apply lip balm from side to side

The doctor advises against applying lip balm horizontally from left to right. Instead, you should apply it vertically following the lip line. This can reduce the pulling force on the lips, allowing the nourishing ingredients to be smoothly absorbed and preventing further damage to dry and chapped skin in areas that are prone to wrinkles.

Applying lip balm vertically helps nutrients absorb better into the lips.

4 steps to deep moisturization for plump and soft lips

Step 1: Apply a thick layer of lip balm

Step 2: Use a cotton swab to apply it along the lip line, moisturizing from the inside out, while also massaging gently. If you have time, you can gently massage in small circles.

Step 3: Use a facial moisturizing spray and spritz it onto your lips.

Step 4: Finally, wrap your lips with plastic wrap and leave it on for 10 minutes.

With these 4 simple steps, you’ll notice that any fine lines and dryness disappear, leaving your lips super soft and smooth.

The best times to apply lip balm for maximum effect

Hidekazu Aoyama, director of Akasaka Aesthetic Clinic in Japan, emphasizes that lip care products should be applied a maximum of 5 times a day. Applying it more than 5 times will cause unnecessary friction and be counterproductive. Lips are more prone to dryness in the morning after brushing your teeth and washing your face, and also after taking a shower in the evening, so make sure to apply lip balm at these two times. Additionally, if you want to put on makeup after brushing your teeth and washing your face in the morning, apply lip balm first as a base, and then apply your lipstick. This will not only protect your lips but also make your makeup last longer. If the corners of your mouth and the surrounding area are very dry, you can apply lip balm along the lip line. If the condition worsens, or if you experience allergies and rashes, consult a dermatologist as soon as possible.
