All jeans have an extra small pocket inside the front main pocket. This ‘unusual’ small pocket is considered a standard feature on jeans, regardless of gender. All jeans have two back pockets, two front pockets, and a rather odd-shaped small rectangular pocket attached to one of the front pockets. Why did the manufacturers sew this tiny pocket?
There have been various opinions about the purpose of this pocket: to hold coins, to hold gold, and it could even be used for candies or condoms.
And we naturally accepted those answers and believed them to be true. Until the founder of jeans, the Levis brand, started posting the real meaning of those super small pockets on their official website:
“The small pocket on jeans was originally designed to protect pocket watches. Later, as people started calling them by different names, they began to have multiple functions, such as coin pockets, candy pockets, or ticket pockets.”
True to its name, Levi Strauss designed the tiny pocket to hold pocket watches, as wristwatches were not yet popular at the time.
The correct answer was provided by the world’s largest jeans brand, Levi’s. This pocket is for pocket watches, simply because when jeans were invented, wristwatches were not yet in use.
In the 1870s and 1880s, when today’s commonly used wristwatches did not exist, people used pocket watches. So, when Levi Strauss, the father of the Levi’s jeans brand, designed jeans for laborers and cowboys in 1873, he created this tiny pocket specifically for pocket watches. This pocket is also called a fob pocket.
