The sun’s UV rays damage the hair’s cuticle and the protein (keratin) that forms its structure. Just as with the skin, applying sunscreen is an essential step in any routine.

Prolonged sun exposure can lead to a dry and sunburned scalp, causing significant damage and itchiness. Dyed hair is more vulnerable due to reduced keratin, making it easier for sunlight to penetrate the hair shaft compared to natural hair.

Prolonged sun exposure can dry and burn the scalp, causing severe damage and itchiness.

Using sunscreen can protect hair from UV rays, preventing dryness, breakage, and hair fall. It is recommended to use hair sunscreen when spending extended periods outdoors, especially on sunny days.

The Benefits of Hair Sunscreen

Hair sunscreen forms a protective layer over each hair strand’s cuticle. The active ingredients in hair sunscreen are similar to those in skincare sunscreens. Products containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide create a protective barrier on the hair.

Individuals with hair more susceptible to sun damage, such as light-colored or thin hair, should use hair sunscreen. Light-colored hair lacks natural protective pigments, and thinner hair provides less coverage for the scalp.

How to Use Hair Sunscreen

Reapply Every Two Hours:

Hair is exposed to sunlight, especially during UV peak hours, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Like regular sunscreen, hair sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours.

Consider the SPF:

A higher SPF provides stronger and longer-lasting protection. If you have thin or light-colored hair or plan to be in the sun for extended periods, consider using a hair sunscreen with a higher SPF (e.g., SPF 50). Light-colored hair lacks natural protective pigments, and thinner hair provides less coverage for the scalp.

A higher SPF offers more robust and more extended protection.

Apply to Dry Hair:

Most hair sunscreen products are designed for dry hair, so avoid applying them to wet hair unless otherwise instructed.

Apply from Root to Tip:

Ensure you apply the product from root to tip. If using a spray, spritz generously to coat the hair’s outer layer. If using a foam or powder, work it through your hair with your hands.

Reapply hair sunscreen after swimming. After swimming, spray or massage another layer of sunscreen onto your hair and scalp.
