Even in a spotless kitchen, the range hood is often overlooked. Kitchen exhaust hoods not only keep the kitchen clean but also help extract grease, steam, and cooking odors. However, without proper cleaning, the range hood cannot perform optimally, resulting in persistent odors and condensation in the kitchen.
Recently, Josie Bolam, a member of the Facebook group ‘Mrs Hinch Army’, sought advice from the community on cleaning her range hood filter, sharing an image of the yellowed filter. She wrote, “Hi everyone, can anyone help me clean my range hood filter? Please don’t judge the state of them, we are renting and haven’t been here long!”
While many members suggested products like Elbow Grease or dish soap, these methods require strenuous scrubbing.
However, another member offered a natural alternative, a unique approach using aluminum foil and soda crystals, available in powder or liquid form, instead of the typical vinegar and baking soda combination.
Sammie Timms shared, “Line your sink with aluminum foil, shiny side up, add soda crystals and warm water, then place the filters in. Within 5 minutes, the filters will be grease-free. You can see the results on my filters, which hadn’t been cleaned in 5 years.”
Intrigued by this miracle solution, Sandra Bridle asked, “Why the aluminum foil?” Sammie explained, “The aluminum foil reacts with the soda crystals, causing the grease to cling to and stick to the foil.”
Several other group members also testified to the success of this method. Amy Hughes shared, “They always come out sparkling when I use soda crystals. Grease used to be such a pain to clean.”
Simon Higgins added, “Soda crystals are brilliant; I cleaned my filters a week ago. I’m ashamed to say I used to put them in the dishwasher, but not anymore.”
