Rice water has been a trusted hair treatment for many beauties to protect and restore their locks.

One such beauty is Huỳnh Minh Kiên, 2nd Runner-up of Miss World Vietnam 2023. Minh Kiên impressed throughout the pageant with her unique mixed-race features and her long, lustrous, and healthy hair, free from tangles and frizz.

Minh Kiên captivated audiences with her long, dark hair when she won 2nd Runner-up.

Before donating her hair to cancer patients, Minh Kiên’s hair reached her waist.

Prior to donating her hair, Minh Kiên shared her hair care secret in an old video. She simply used rice water to stimulate hair growth and strengthen her strands.

In addition to Minh Kiên, another Vietnamese beauty queen, Miss Earth Nguyễn Phương Khánh, also shared her experience with using rice water to promote hair growth after suffering from severe hair loss that left her with a bald patch on her forehead.

Benefits of Rice Water

A question arises: Is rice water as miraculous as oral traditions claim? In reality, rice water contains amino acids, B-complex vitamins, vitamin E, minerals, and antioxidants.

Rice water is rich in nutrients beneficial for hair protection and nourishment.

These nutrients contribute to shiny, elastic hair, reducing breakage. Additionally, they nourish the hair follicles, minimizing hair fall and promoting faster hair growth.

Furthermore, the inositol in rice water penetrates damaged hair, resisting rinsing, and helps restore hair health while protecting it from heat and chemical damage. Rice water also balances the scalp’s pH, reduces excess oil, and stimulates thicker hair growth.

How to Use Rice Water for Hair Loss

There is ongoing debate online about whether to use plain or fermented rice water, but the choice depends on individual scalp sensitivity to fermented rice water.

To use plain rice water, collect the second rinse water (the whitest and cloudiest), let it settle for 30 minutes, then decant the clear water. Shampoo your hair, then massage the rice water into your scalp for 5-10 minutes before rinsing with plain water or a mild shampoo.

To ferment rice water, leave it at room temperature for 1-2 days until it develops a mild sour smell but not for more than 24 hours. Dilute it with plain water at a 1:1 ratio, apply it to your hair, and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour before rinsing.

Fermented rice water is believed to balance scalp pH better but may irritate sensitive scalps.

However, it’s important to patch test the treatment on a small section of hair first to avoid scalp irritation. Use it 2-3 times a week to prevent greasy hair.
