Gold mines are invaluable natural resources. While there are approximately 500 gold mining sites across the country, Quang Nam province boasts the largest gold reserves in Vietnam.

Quang Nam: Home to Vietnam’s Largest Gold Reserves

Mineral exploration has revealed that Vietnam possesses approximately 25 tons of primary gold, with Quang Nam being the locality with the highest gold reserves. Notably, the gold mines in Quang Nam are primarily concentrated in the Bong Mieu and Phuoc Son areas.

The Bong Mieu gold mine is considered the largest gold mine in the country, with estimated reserves of over 20 tons. Bong Mieu is located in Tam Lanh commune, Phu Ninh district, Quang Nam province.

The French had explored the Bong Mieu gold mine as far back as 1859. In 1918, the mine produced 74kg of gold, but it was later closed due to a decline in gold prices.

More recently, the Bong Mieu gold mine has been operational again, providing numerous job opportunities for the locals. The mine is managed by the Bong Mieu Gold Mining Company Limited, which has been operating since 1992. However, in March 2016, the company’s mining license expired, and in 2018, it was declared bankrupt.

This situation led to illegal mining activities by people from various places. Consequently, in March 2022, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment decided to allow Quang Nam province to close the Bong Mieu mine. In August 2022, the province invested nearly VND 20 billion to seal off this mine.

The second gold mine in Quang Nam is the Dak Sa mine in Phuoc Son, with estimated reserves of about 7 tons of gold. In 2012, the pure gold yield from the Phuoc Son mine was significant. Currently, the Phuoc Son Gold Company is licensed to exploit gold in two areas, Bai Dat and Bai Go, within the Dak Sa mine, under the Project for Exploitation of Gold Ore Minerals in the Phuoc Son area. However, in February 2025, the Vietnam Mineral Resources Bureau sent a dispatch to the People’s Committee of Quang Nam province, requesting their opinion on the Proposal for the Closure of the Primary Gold Mine at Dak Sa.

Quang Nam and Da Nang: A Proposed Merger

The name Quang Nam has existed since 1471, following the victory of King Le Thanh Tong at Tra Ban. It has endured to the present day.

Quang Nam boasts two cities, Tam Ky and Hoi An, and enjoys a favorable geographical location for trade connections with other localities.

Proposed Merger of Quang Nam and Da Nang

Quang Nam is also the only province in Vietnam with two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the My Son Sanctuary and the Ancient Town of Hoi An. The province is home to the Cu Lao Cham Islands, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, boasting pristine beauty, white sandy beaches, and stunning landscapes. Chu Lai Economic Zone, Vietnam’s first coastal open economic zone, is also located in Quang Nam.

In the 2025 provincial merger proposal, Quang Nam is planned to merge with Da Nang, with the new entity bearing the name “Da Nang,” and the administrative center located in the current Da Nang city.
