Phan Dinh Phung High School was established in 1923 and was initially named École Normale Supérieur Đỗ Hữu Vị, after the first pilot of Indochina. Over the years, the school underwent several changes and, in 1996, officially adopted its current name, Phan Dinh Phung High School.

Prospective students are required to take three exams in Mathematics, Literature, and English, and the total score of these subjects, along with any incentive points, determines their eligibility for enrollment.
