What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are volatile aromatic compounds extracted from various parts of plants such as leaves, stems, flowers, bark, and roots. These oils are obtained through different methods and are in liquid form.
Types and Classifications of Essential Oils
There are different types of essential oils with unique classifications. Here are some examples:
Pure Essential Oil
Pure essential oils are extracted from 100% natural plants and are not mixed with any other chemical ingredients. They are safe for health, except for some non-edible herbs. When pure essential oils are mixed with other chemicals, they become impure essential oils while preserving the aroma of the original essential oil.
Synthetic Essential Oils
Synthetic essential oils are created through chemical synthesis to mimic the smell of natural essential oils. These oils are made up of a combination of chemicals and are used in various products.
Methods of Producing Essential Oils
There are several methods for producing essential oils:
Steam Distillation Method
This method is used to extract essential oils from leaves, flowers, roots, and bark. It produces high purity essential oils. The process involves heating the ingredients in a sealed jar and the steam carries the essential oil through a condenser. Water and essential oils are separated, resulting in pure essential oil.
Solvent Extraction Method
This method is used for extracting essential oils that are difficult to extract using other methods, especially flower essential oils. A solvent is used to pull the essential oil, reducing evaporation.
Method of Marinating
The marinating method is applied to extract essential oils from flowers. It involves placing fresh flowers on a glass plate covered with lard and silk. The flowers are stacked in wooden molds and left in a closed room for a specific period of time until the fat is saturated with essential oils.
Cold Pressing Method
This method is used for extracting essential oils from fruit peels or plants that are easy to extract. It produces high-quality essential oils as it doesn’t involve heat.
