Sunscreen is a crucial product in a skincare routine. However, many individuals often overlook its importance and lack knowledge on how to use it effectively. Let’s gain more understanding through the following article.

1 How frequently should you apply sunscreen?

Dr. Dang Bich Diep, Stem Cell Research and Application Department – Central Dermatology Hospital, shared valuable insights on sun protection. “The period from 10-14 hours a day experiences the highest harmful index for the skin. Hence, it is necessary to take measures to protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays by applying sunscreen before heading outdoors. Apply sunscreen at least three times a day, with intervals of 2-3 hours, and ensure to apply it 20 minutes prior to sun exposure. Opt for sunscreen with a high SPF, such as SPF 50+, for enhanced protection under intense sunlight,” stated Dr. Diep.

In addition to sunscreen, it is essential to safeguard exposed skin areas with protective items like hats, sunglasses, gloves, and sun-protective clothing.

2 Common mistakes when applying sunscreen

Dr. Trinh Minh Trang from the Central Dermatology Hospital believes, “Sunscreen should be used throughout the year, not just during the summer season.”

Insufficient sunscreen application: For effective skin protection, it is recommended to apply sunscreen at least twice a day, ideally three to four times. Adjust the frequency based on the situation, but ensure the skin always has a protective layer of sunscreen. In case of excessive sweating, reapply sunscreen every two hours. Cleanse the skin (remove makeup and wash the face) before reapplication to ensure maximum efficacy.

Inappropriate sun protection factor (SPF): Selecting an appropriate SPF based on sunlight exposure and skin area is important. For regular sun exposure and strong sunlight, opt for sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher. In contrast, in environments with limited direct sunlight or less sunny weather, a sunscreen with a lower SPF can be chosen.

Incorrect utilization of other sun protection products: Improper combinations of products like moisturizers, serums, and sunscreen can diminish the effectiveness of sunscreen. To achieve optimal results, directly apply sunscreen to the face. If moisturizer is used beforehand, allow it to absorb into the skin for approximately 15-20 minutes before applying sunscreen. Maintain a 15-20 minutes interval between moisturizer and sunscreen application. Furthermore, select sunscreen suitable for each skin area and condition, considering skin type (oily, dry, sensitive, etc.).

3 Proper reapplication of sunscreen

Method 1:

  • Wash your hands and use oil-absorbing paper to gently pat oily areas of the skin. Apply a new layer of sunscreen in small quantities during reapplication.

Method 2:

  • Wash your hands using mild cleanser and then use toner to remove old sunscreen. Avoid using face wash, especially for oily and acne-prone skin. Healthy skin can be swiftly rinsed with water. Apply moisturizer to hydrate the skin, followed by sunscreen reapplication using an adequate amount.

Method 1:

  • Utilize a sunscreen spray to cover the makeup layer. This method is quick and convenient but may result in an uneven makeup layer.

Method 2:

  • Initiate the process with makeup remover or oil cleanser to eliminate dirt from the skin. Subsequently, cleanse the skin with a suitable cleanser to ensure cleanliness. Apply moisturizer to provide hydration to the skin. Lastly, reapply sunscreen for shielding the skin from UV rays.

Regular reapplication of sunscreen is crucial for optimal sun protection. However, the method of reapplication may have varying advantages and disadvantages based on the work environment and individual needs. We hope this article proves helpful to you!
