Mía Chicken is a unique and prominent chicken breed in Vietnam. This chicken breed stands out for its distinct appearance and delicious meat, making it a favorite among many people. We will now reveal what makes Mía Chicken so special that it is in high demand during the Tet holiday, despite its expensive price.

1What’s so special about Mía Chicken?

Mía Chicken originates from Sơn Tây, Hanoi, and is now raised in many provinces across Vietnam. Mía Chickens have short bodies, large thighs, deep eyes, red combs, glossy feathers, and golden-yellow legs. The roosters have reddish-purple feathers, while the hens’ feathers are mostly brownish-gray or yellow.

According to An Ninh and colleagues in 2003, Mía Chickens weigh approximately 32 grams at birth, and by the time they are four months old, the average weight of a rooster is about 2.32 kg, while a hen weighs around 2.9 kg. When fully grown, hens typically weigh around 3-3.5 kg, while roosters can reach up to 5 kg.
Mía Chickens can weigh up to 5 kg each. Mía Chickens start laying eggs when they are 7-8 months old, which is quite late compared to other chicken breeds. However, they can lay up to 50-55 eggs per year, and the eggs are also quite large, weighing around 50-55g each.

Mía Chicken has naturally sweet and tasty meat
Mía Chicken is highly sought-after and loved mainly due to the exceptional quality of its meat. Mía Chicken has crispy skin, minimal fat under the skin, and the meat is chewy, firm, and incredibly sweet. Therefore, this breed is primarily raised for meat production.

2Mía Chicken Price

Currently, young Mía Chickens sold for breeding purposes cost around 10,000 – 20,000 VND each, while free-range Mía Chickens usually range from 150,000 to 170,000 VND per chicken. These prices may fluctuate during holidays when demand increases and supply becomes scarce.

Mía Chicken is quite expensive
Additionally, caponized Mía roosters, also known as “eunuch” chickens, command a high price because they require special care and selective breeding. While regular roosters cost approximately 90,000 – 120,000 VND per kg, eunuch chickens are priced three times higher.
Specifically, eunuch chickens weighing 3 – 3.5 kg are priced at around 350,000 VND per kg, and those weighing over 4 kg can fetch a price of more than 400,000 VND per kg.
