1. Make it bright
More than 74% of people in a survey stated that they want a bright home with many windows. This is not surprising because natural light has a healing and relaxing effect, improving our mood.
With the start of longer days and more sunlight to love, we need to make the effort to bring light into our homes to the degree that enhances our happiness.
Now that you know that window treatments do all of that but you can opt for many ways to bathe your home in natural sunlight and block out the sun when necessary.
A few other tricks for creating the illusion of more light is to paint the room yellow to reflect sunlight or add mirrors to have more reflected light. Embrace as much light as you can for a happy home.
2. Make it peaceful
A peaceful home is one that is less cluttered, gentle, and everything is well arranged and organized and pleasing to the eye.
Comfortable furniture helps enhance a peaceful home and 77% of people feel happy and content on cozy and warm comfy sofas, beds, and chairs.
Studies have shown that a messy, disorganized home actually makes us feel tired, anxious, restless, and jittery, even making us eat more! So keep a peaceful and happy home.
3. Make it cool
The optimal sleeping temperature is 65 degrees. Most homes are overly heated, often emitting a lethargic hum, so, to be sheltered, crisp, and inviting, cozy under a textured painting when the days turn chilly or have a fan running on warm and stuffy days.
4. Bring green into space
Live plants truly cleanse our indoor air and reduce cancer-causing agents and other invisible nasties floating in the air and settling in crevices.
Detox your space with vegetation and reduce stress by adding a touch of outdoor beauty, freshness, and organic vibrations, much needed for our outdoorsy soul of yore.
Even a small point of greenery brightens and dispels all the “bad guys” taking over your home.
5. Good sound
Whether you are a city girl or a city boy and enjoy the soundscape of the city or you are immersing in nature or you are a family unit leader or you are a resident DJ, give your home an extra energy boost with a sound system that makes you happy.
Whether it’s the twittering of birds, amplified traffic, pounding music, or just the laughter of children and friends – find a way to amplify the special sound of your home.
6. Comforting scents
Who doesn’t love the smell of freshly baked bread or melting chocolate cookies or bubbling spiced apple cider in the kitchen?
The scents in our personal holiday stimulate happy and nostalgic feelings, so don’t skip out on family traditions to add a good smell to your home.
If you don’t cook, scented candles can do the trick, and the easiest thing to do is to open a window, smell the flowers or the cool rain, and allow the fresh breeze to blow away your blues.
7. Ideal bed
No doubt anymore, studies show that our favorite room is the bedroom, so turn this room into the ultimate happiness sanctuary.
Indulge yourself in a good mattress, the best pillows, and the softest bedding, all covered with an ultra-soft cotton blanket. Relax here in this room, where we spend so many hours each day.
Remember that good light treatments and perfectly operable windows are essential. Use a motorized window covering so you don’t even have to get out of bed to operate blinds or drapes.
Although 16% of us like to skip making the bed, I think a well-made bed will minimize sleepless nights.
8. Make it harmonious
Sometimes we forget to eliminate moments, images, or objects that evoke bad feelings.
It could be colors we no longer favor, or pictures of people we don’t want to remember, things that disrupt our happy mood. Just keep what makes you happy and discard the rest; less is best.
