How to Choose Herbal Flowers
Herbal flowers are plants with succulent stems and leaves that can last for a long time. When buying, choose fresh flowers that are just starting to bloom, with evenly sized petals, and especially, flowers that are not crushed.
Choose herbal branches with enough main flowers (which are the largest and most stimulating flowers in the branch). The branch should have one main flower, bud, old leaves, and young leaves.
The flower stem should be long, firm, not broken or crushed, and without any discoloration or foul odor.
Choose long and plump flower branches.
How to Keep Herbal Flowers Fresh
– Preparing the flowers
After buying the flowers, remove the wrapping and plastic bag. Prepare a bucket of water and soak the flower stems in the water for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Note that the flower heads should not touch the water. This step helps the flowers recover after the transportation process. Once the flowers have absorbed enough water, you can start arranging them. Remove all the leaves that touch the water, and avoid letting the leaves soak in the water as they will quickly rot and ruin the flowers.
– Preparing flower nutrient water
You can buy flower nutrient products and follow the instructions on the packaging. If not, you can add a little sugar to clean water and use it to arrange the flowers. Alternatively, you can dissolve aspirin, white vinegar, B1, or lemon juice in the water for flower arrangement. These types of water have antibacterial properties and provide nutrients to keep the flowers fresh for a longer time.
Only use enough water for the flower roots to absorb. Herbal flowers can last longer if arranged with floral foam, as the hollow stem of the flowers reduces their lifespan when submerged in water.
Regularly change the water for the flowers. When changing the water, make sure to clean both the vase and the flower roots. You can also trim the waterlogged part of the flower roots.
– Arranging the flowers
If arranging the flowers standing straight, only fill the vase halfway with water. If arranging the flowers horizontally, pour more water to ensure all the flowers are in contact with the water.
Each time you change the water, remove any withered leaves and trim the outer petals that are shedding.
You can arrange herbal flowers of different colors together or mix them with single flowers and violets.
