Dr. Enrizza P. Factor, a member of the Philippine Dermatological Society, notes that silicones are commonly found in shampoos and are touted for their ability to add shine and gloss to hair. However, Dr. Factor emphasizes that this substance can hinder the scalp’s absorption of essential nutrients, leading to weaker hair follicles and subsequent hair loss. “Silicones in shampoos can cause hair fall by coating the scalp and preventing nutrient absorption,” she says.

Over time, silicones can also build up on the hair, weighing it down and leading to breakage.
2. Sulfates
This powerful detergent is a common ingredient in shampoos and conditioners. While they are included for their ability to remove natural oils, sulfates can also leave hair dry, brittle, and damaged over time. Using products containing strong sulfates can exacerbate hair fall, especially for those with fine or fragile hair.
Most hair experts concur that sulfates are “among the most damaging ingredients” found in popular conditioners. Hairstylist Lauren Udoh notes that this ingredient in conditioners “can also cause scalp irritation and hair loss.”
Jean Will, co-founder of wig and hair care brand NiaWigs Inc., adds: “Surfactants like sulfates are used to remove dead skin and excess oil from the scalp. They can make your hair frizzy and cause allergic reactions on the scalp. Moreover, prolonged use can lead to hormonal imbalances.”
3. Sodium Chloride
Dr. Yoram Harth, a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Hair Research Society, points out that sodium chloride is a common ingredient in commercially produced shampoos and conditioners. This substance is often used as a thickening agent and can “cause scalp dryness, redness, and itching.”
Expert Yoram Harth further notes that scalp irritation can “damage hair follicles and lead to increased hair fall.”
Dr. Harth recommends that women with thin hair or experiencing hair loss avoid shampoos and conditioners containing sodium chloride.
