Puffy eyes occur when the structural tissues and muscles supporting the eyelids weaken, possibly due to water retention, lack of sleep, smoking, genetics, skin inflammation, or kidney disease. Typically, puffy eyes can make your face look tired, but they are usually harmless. There are some simple exercises that can help improve this condition.
Eye Bag Massage
Place your index fingers on both sides of your nose bridge. Gently tap the area under your eyes, along the cheekbones, moving towards your temples, then gently pat upwards towards the eyes, and back down to the bridge of your nose. This technique helps bring blood, carrying oxygen and nutrients, to the area around your eyes.
The V Shape
Place your middle fingers on both sides of your nose bridge, and extend your index fingers to the outer corners of your eyes so that your fingers form a ‘V’ shape. Look up at the ceiling, keeping your head and face still. Squint your lower eyelids to close your eyes halfway.
Hold this position for two to three seconds, then relax. Repeat this movement three times, with each repetition lasting 30 seconds.
Yoga for Eyes
Place one hand on your forehead, palm facing down. Keep your forehead still and only move your eyes up and down, then side to side. Remember to only move your eyes – the hand on your forehead will help you be aware of whether your eyes are moving.
After about 30 seconds, bring your eyes back to the center. Open your eyes as wide as you can and take a deep breath. Finally, lower your hand and end the exercise.
Cheek Massage
Gently place your index, middle, and ring fingers on the prominent part of your upper cheeks. Massage in a circular motion, combining upward pushes on your cheeks while ensuring your eyes remain straight.
Eye Muscle Lift
Using two finger joints (index and middle), start from the inner corner of your nose and stretch the skin as far as possible towards your temples. Continue by pressing the palm of your hand against your eye bags and lifting your eyes diagonally.
Neck Massage
Place three fingers (index, middle, and ring) on your neck and stroke downwards from your earlobes to your collarbones. This movement not only helps promote blood circulation but also gradually corrects your standing and sitting posture. Additionally, this exercise helps minimize turtle neck and encourages a healthier posture and body alignment.
