According to expert Ryuki Ohba, not shampooing your hair can not only lead to ineffective cleansing but also accelerate the aging process of the scalp, causing hair loss. Proper shampooing prevents scalp aging and alleviates issues like graying, hair loss, dryness, and more.
There are 5 steps to shampooing as guided by expert Ryuki Ohba:
Step 1: Rinse with Water
Most people would first wet their hair with water before applying shampoo. However, Ryuki Ohba suggests that instead of just rinsing with regular water, use warm water for about 2-3 minutes.
This not only thoroughly wets the hair but also washes away most of the dirt on the hair and scalp, allowing the shampoo to lather better. Additionally, the optimal water temperature is 38 degrees Celsius, close to body temperature, to avoid irritating the scalp.
Step 2: Apply Shampoo
After pouring the shampoo into your hand, rub your palms together to create a lather, and then apply it to your scalp. Run your fingers through your hair and gently shake your head up and down to create more lather with the help of air.

Step 3: Scalp Massage
Ryuki Ohba suggests imagining your head as a peach, massaging it with a gentle force as if touching a peach, and using your finger pads instead of your nails. Start from the sides of your ears, slightly bending your fingers, and slowly move upwards, using your fingertips to draw circles. After about 3 minutes, you can rinse.
Step 4: Towel Blot to Remove Excess Water
Avoid vigorously rubbing your hair with a towel after shampooing as it can damage the cuticle, cause tangles, and even lead to hair breakage and loss. Ryuki Ohba recommends gently pressing the towel against your hair to absorb the excess moisture.
Step 5: Blow-dry with Warm and Cool Air
There is a science to blow-drying as well. Start by blowing from the back of your head, where the hair is thickest. Use warm air to blow-dry your hair until it’s about 90% dry, and then switch to cool air to completely dry it.

Start blow-drying from the back of your head, where the hair is thickest.
This adds shine to your hair and helps style it. During the process, maintain a safe distance between the blow dryer and your head, and vary the direction of the airflow to prevent hair damage.
A control group was also featured in the program to compare their usual shampooing method with that of expert Ryuki Ohba. The results showed that hair shampooed using the correct steps became smoother and shinier.
