It’s no wonder that a host of Hollywood A-listers, including the likes of Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Taylor Swift, Hailey Bieber, and Victoria Beckham, swear by their silk pillowcases. Even K-pop idol Rose of the renowned group Black Pink, with her hectic touring schedule, never travels without her trusty silk pillowcase. She shares that she couldn’t live without this item. But do silk pillowcases truly help these celebrities maintain their luscious locks, despite frequent hair styling?

In a revealing clip, Rose shared that her silk pillowcase is a must-have item to protect her hair and skin while on the go.

Victoria Beckham also attested to the skin-friendly benefits of sleeping on silk, claiming it helps reduce wrinkles.

Do Silk Pillowcases Benefit Your Hair?

Numerous beauty articles recommend sleeping on silk pillowcases, citing benefits for both hair and skin due to reduced friction. Hasina Jeelani, an editor at “VOGUE,” decided to test this theory herself to see if there would be any noticeable improvements in her hair’s quality or less hair fall. Here’s what she discovered.

Firstly, the good news is that sleeping on a pure silk pillowcase is indeed a luxurious experience. But does it make a significant difference to your hair? Not entirely. There were some minor changes, though. “Firstly, I noticed fewer strands of hair on my bed in the morning, and my hair didn’t feel as tangled and frizzy as usual,” shared Hasina Jeelani.

Silk pillowcases may help reduce hair dryness and frizz, but their impact on hair fall is less pronounced.

Dr. Madhuri Agarwal, founder of a cosmetic clinic in Mumbai, India, concurs: “While silk pillowcases may not drastically reduce hair fall or breakage, they can be beneficial for those with dry and frizzy hair. For those with curly hair, silk pillowcases can definitely provide some relief. Cotton pillows tend to absorb moisture, leaving hair dry in the morning, whereas silk doesn’t have the same effect.”

If you’re looking to minimize hair breakage while you sleep, Dr. Madhuri Agarwal suggests the following tips:

– Avoid sleeping with wet hair as it is more prone to breakage. Ensure your hair is thoroughly dry before hitting the hay.

– Don’t sleep with your hair in tight braids, buns, or secured with hair ties, clips, etc. If possible, let your hair down or loosely braid it before sleeping.

– Make sure to brush your hair before bed to prevent tangles from worsening overnight.

– For added protection, apply a small amount of hair serum or a hair mask suitable for your hair type. This ensures your hair gets the nourishment it needs while you sleep and reduces breakage.
