Causes of oily hair
In normal conditions, the scalp produces a certain amount of sebum to provide enough moisture for a healthy scalp and hair. Excessive sebum production can lead to oily scalp and hair.
– Hormonal changes: Sebum production varies for each individual and fluctuations in testosterone, estrogen, or progesterone levels can directly affect sebum production.
– Overwashing: Washing your hair too frequently can strip away the natural oils, causing the scalp to produce more oil to compensate. Not washing your hair enough can also be an issue, as it can lead to oil buildup on the hair and scalp.
– Overuse of hair styling products: Using too many hair styling products can weigh down the hair, resulting in excess oil and buildup.
– Constantly touching the hair: Touching the hair frequently transfers dirt and oils from the scalp to the hair, making it greasy faster.
– Temperature and humidity: The environment also plays a role in sebum production. Hot or humid climates can cause the scalp to sweat.
How to reduce oily hair?
– Use oil-control shampoo
Brush your hair before washing to remove dirt and debris, then use a deep cleansing shampoo to remove oil. People with oily hair should choose oil-control shampoos that contain mint and other antibacterial ingredients.
After washing, make sure to dry your hair. If you go to bed with damp hair, wrap your head with a towel and gently press to remove excess moisture, then pat dry.
– Massage the scalp to improve blood circulation
Massage the scalp by gently pressing with your fingertips. Start by moving upwards from the eyebrows and kneading the starting point of the hairline. Massage in both directions, circularly massage 10 times in one direction, and simultaneously massage the temples in a similar manner as before.
– Adjust your diet
Eating spicy foods stimulates oil production. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust your diet, preferably eat less oily and spicy foods, try to eat more fruits and vegetables, and drink more water.
– Reduce exposure to ultraviolet rays
If the scalp is exposed to ultraviolet rays for a long time, the collagen content in the skin will gradually decrease. Like other parts of the skin, the scalp will also become dry and age faster.
– Reduce stress: Keeping a relaxed state of mind, good stress control, and getting enough sleep can also help reduce oily hair.
