Vietnam’s history has gone through many dynasties, with ups and downs and upheavals. There have been virtuous and wise kings, as well as kings who indulged in pleasure and were cruel. However, in any case, they are all essential pieces that contribute to a colorful picture, the progress made to reach the present day…
In Vietnam, the Le dynasty has two periods: the Early Le dynasty (980-1009) and the Later Le dynasty (1428-1789). According to historical records, the Le family in Vietnam is one of the distinctive lineages of the Lac Viet ethnic group, who have settled in Thanh Hoa and Ninh Binh since ancient times. Especially the kings and celebrities of the Le family, the founders of many Le lineages in our country all originate from Lac Viet land, not a single one originating from China. In Vietnam, there is only one Le family lineage, accounting for about 11-15% of the population (according to the Vietnam Le family website).
According to the Le family genealogy, this family lineage is considered the ancestors of the Vietnamese people from the time of the birth of the nation, starting with the Lac Viet ethnic group. According to the book “Festivals and Historical Celebrities of Vietnam”, An Duong Vuong, the founder of the Le family lineage, was born in My Duc, Hanoi. At the end of the 18th Hung Vuong dynasty, in 258 BC, An Duong Vuong ascended the throne and proclaimed himself An Duong Vuong, abandoning the national insignia of Van Lang, changing the name to Au Lac, establishing the capital in Dong Kinh, and building the Co Loa citadel. An Duong Vuong is honored as the ancestor of the Le family lineage.
After thousands of years of history, along with hundreds of other lineages, the Le family has contributed their efforts, talents, intelligence, and blood to build and protect the Vietnamese nation. The Le family lineage has established two dynasties: the Early Le dynasty ruling for 29 years (980-1009) and the Later Le dynasty ruling for 361 years (1428-1789). The first king of the Early Le dynasty was Le Hoan. The founder of the Later Le dynasty was Le Thai To (Le Loi).
Among the 31 kings of the Le lineage, Le Hien Tong was the king with the longest reign. He sat on the golden throne for 46 years (1740-1786). However, during this period, the role of the Le kings was not clearly demonstrated due to the dominance of the Trinh lords.
In contrast, according to the “Dai Viet Chronicles,” the king with the shortest reign was Le Long Viet (Le Trung Tong, son of King Le Dai Hanh). He only ruled for a mere three days before being overthrown by his younger brother, Le Long Dinh.
According to the book “Lich Trieu Hien Chuong Loai Chi,” Le Than Tong of the Later Le dynasty had four sons who became kings. They are Le Chan Tong, Le Huyen Tong, Le Gia Tong, and Le Hy Tong. There is an interesting anecdote about King Le Trang Tong. When he was a child, he had the nickname “Chua Chom” (Lord Chom). He had a free-spirited personality and liked to wander among the common people. He accumulated debts and couldn’t pay them off. This is where the famous saying “Debt like Lord Chom” originated. Nguyen Kim later made Le Trang Tong the first king of the prosperous Le dynasty.
