When it comes to bottles and jars, you can reuse them after using up the contents inside, which helps save money and protect the environment. However, these containers often come with labels. We need to remove these labels before reusing the bottles to avoid confusion and ensure aesthetics and suitability for their intended use.
However, removing the outer label on bottles is not easy. If you don’t know how, the label can be torn and leave behind sticky residue.
Here are some helpful tips to solve this problem.
Use a hairdryer
A hairdryer can generate heat to melt the adhesive, making it easier to remove the bottle label. You can use the hairdryer at the highest heat setting and aim it at the label area for about 1-2 minutes. The hot air will melt the adhesive, and you can simply peel off the label gently.
Note that this method is only suitable for glass bottles and heat-resistant materials. Plastic bottles that cannot withstand high temperatures may not be suitable for this method.
After heating, you need to quickly peel off the label because the adhesive will harden when it cools.
If you don’t have a hairdryer, you can leave the glass bottles exposed to direct sunlight for a few hours to melt the adhesive and remove the label.
Use baking soda and cooking oil
A mixture of baking soda and cooking oil can create a slippery surface that makes it easy to peel off the adhesive.
You can mix 1 part baking soda with 1 part cooking oil. Apply this mixture to the label surface and leave it on for 10-30 minutes. When the label becomes soft, use a cloth or a sponge to gently rub and peel off the label.
Use 70% alcohol, heavy-duty alcohol, gasoline, or lighter fluid
These solutions have the function of softening adhesives, making it easy to peel off sticky labels on bottles.
Apply a layer of the solution to the label surface and let it sit for 5-7 minutes. This solution will soften the label and make the adhesive less sticky than before. Note that when performing this method, you should wear gloves and a mask to avoid inhaling unpleasant odors from gasoline, oil, alcohol, etc.
Note that alcohol evaporates quickly, so you should peel off the label quickly.
Use camphor oil
Camphor oil contains essential oils that can soften the adhesive, making it easier to remove the label. Simply apply a few drops of camphor oil to the label, spread it evenly, and then peel off the label. Rinse the bottle with soap to remove any remaining adhesive and camphor oil.
Use nail polish remover
Nail polish remover also has the ability to alter the adhesive, making it lose its original stickiness. Just apply nail polish remover to the label and let it sit for about 10 minutes, then use a brush to remove the label.
Use hot water and dish soap
Prepare a basin of hot water and add some dish soap to create a soapy solution. Place the glass bottle in the water and let it soak for about 10-30 minutes. The label must be submerged in the water.
After that, take the bottle out and use a blunt knife to gently scrape off the label. With the combination of hot water, soap, and the scraping motion, the label and adhesive will be cleaned.
