When there is only one vase of flowers

If there is only one vase of flowers, it is advisable to follow the “east vase, west fruit” principle, which has been applied to altar arrangements since ancient times.

This arrangement method originates from the natural principle that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and plants must bloom before bearing fruit. Therefore, in worshipping, the vase of flowers is placed in the east and the tray of fruits is placed in the west.

The orientation on the altar is determined as follows: Looking from inside the altar, the left side of the ancestors (left side) is considered the east. The symmetrical side (right side) is the west.

The ancestral altar is usually placed in the center of the house facing south. The vase of flowers is placed on the left side of the altar (east). When there is an eastern or southeasterly wind blowing in, the gentle fragrance of the flowers will spread throughout the worship space. The fruit tray is placed on the right side (west) for convenience in presentation.

When there are two vases of flowers

If the ancestral altar is spacious, the homeowner can consider placing two symmetrical vases of flowers on both sides. In that case, the tray of fruits will be placed in the middle of the altar, in front of the incense bowl. This creates a sense of balance and elegance for the altar.

However, depending on the area and space of the altar, the homeowner can choose large or small vases, and a few or many flowers.

Placement of the vase of flowers and some notes for worshipping

In addition to knowing which side the vase of flowers is placed on the ancestral altar, the homeowner should also take note of the following:

– The vase of flowers should not be missing from the altar along with the accessories: incense bowl, brass top, to enhance the sacredness and solemnity of the worship space.

– If the altar is small and hanging, only one vase of flowers should be used, with the incense stick placed on the opposite side.

– If the house has a spacious worship cabinet, a larger brass vase can be used, with more decorations following the principle of symmetry and balance.

– Furthermore, when choosing a vase of flowers, the homeowner should not only consider the aesthetic aspect but also pay attention to stability, safety, and quality, while arranging it in a symmetric manner so that the altar does not lean and ensures spiritual value.
