If the ATM malfunctions, your card may get swallowed. However, ATM cards can also get swallowed for the following reasons:
– Entering the wrong PIN code more than the specified number of times (usually 3 or more).
– Due to ATM system transmission errors or power outages.
– Failure to remove the card from the machine after completing a transaction.
Check if the card is being ejected
When the ATM swallows your card, first check by pressing some other buttons if the machine is ejecting the card. If the machine doesn’t release the card, wait a little longer or let someone else perform their transaction.
If the machine still doesn’t return the card, then your ATM card is definitely swallowed.
Handling in 2 scenarios when the ATM card is swallowed
Scenario 1
If you withdraw money from an ATM located next to a bank that is open, you can immediately inform the security guard. Or you can report it to a bank employee for further instructions. You should notify the bank so that they are aware of the situation and can handle it promptly if someone tries to take advantage of the card.
Scenario 2
If you withdraw money from an ATM located far away from the bank, such as in a shopping center, hospital, company, or bookstore, pay attention to whether there is a contact phone number around the ATM. If there is, call that phone number immediately to report the situation and follow the instructions given.
If the ATM doesn’t have any contact phone number, you can go to the nearest branch of that bank to report it.
You can also call the hotline of the bank from which you just withdrew money for assistance:
– Vietcombank hotline: 1900 54 54 13
– Agribank hotline: 1900 55 88 18
– ACB hotline: 1900 54 54 86
– Viettinbank hotline: 1900 54 54 12
– DongA Bank hotline: 1900 54 54 64
– Techcombank hotline: 1800 58 88 22
– BIDV hotline: 1900 92 47
– Sacombank hotline: 1900 55 55 88
If it’s a different bank, you can search for the hotline on the internet.
If you urgently need money and want to withdraw it immediately, there is still a solution.
After reporting the incident, you will usually receive your card back within 1-3 days. If you need cash urgently and can’t wait, you can bring your ID card/passport to the bank to withdraw money.
Notes to prevent ATM card swallowing
To avoid the ATM card being swallowed, you should withdraw money at an ATM of the same bank.
Familiarize yourself with banks that are partnered with the bank that issued your card for convenient ATM usage. In case of unexpected incidents, you can receive faster support. Using ATMs of non-partner banks is one of the reasons why your card gets swallowed when attempting transactions. Also, avoid withdrawing money at ATMs with suspicious signs, such as signs of intrusion. Moreover, limit withdrawals at unfamiliar ATMs or remote locations with little pedestrian traffic.
