How to Clean Bamboo Mats
Bamboo mats tend to collect dirt and dust in their small grooves, making them challenging to clean. To remove the dirt from these grooves, you can use a clothes hanger to gently lift one side of the mat and give it a light tap. The force from the hanger will help dislodge the dirt from the grooves.
Once you’ve finished dusting, you can prepare a cleaning solution using simple ingredients such as baking soda, white vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and disinfectant water (effective in removing dust mites and leaving a pleasant fragrance). Dissolve a small spoonful of each ingredient into half a bucket of water. Then, dip a clean cloth into the solution, wring it out slightly to retain some moisture, and wipe down the mat.
Rubbing alcohol has disinfectant properties, helping to eliminate bacteria and dust mites from the mat. Baking soda assists in removing stains without damaging the mat or your skin. White vinegar effectively removes odors and softens stains, making the mat cleaner. The disinfectant water adds a pleasant fragrance, repelling mosquitoes and insects. After wiping down the mat, it is advisable to rinse it with clean water 2-3 times to ensure no residue is left behind. Allow the mat to air dry in a well-ventilated area before using it again.
Alternative Methods to Clean Bamboo Mats
Using Salt and Lime Powder
If your bamboo mat has absorbed unpleasant odors due to stains or mildew, you can soak it in salty water for about 30 minutes. Afterward, spread out the mat and sprinkle lime powder on the surface to eliminate the musty smell and absorb moisture. Finally, use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe it clean and let the mat air dry.
Using Lemons
For bamboo mats with deep-seated sweat or mildew odors, lemons are an effective solution for odor removal and cleaning. Cut a lemon and rub it onto the mat’s surface, then wipe it clean and let it dry.
Using Salty Water
Salty water is known not only for its disinfectant properties but also for its effectiveness in cleaning bamboo mats. Soak a clean cloth in salty water and thoroughly wipe down the mat’s surface several times. Finally, air-dry the mat in moderate sunlight to avoid damage.
