Established in 1922 during the French colonial period, the Oceanographic Institute has now endured over a century of development. With a 20-hectare campus located near Cau Da Port, which boasts the deepest coastline in Vietnam, the institute not only facilitates research but also serves as a must-visit destination for those fascinated by the ocean and its mysteries.
Since 2023, the institute has undergone a remarkable transformation, with exhibition spaces enhanced by modern, vibrant, and captivating designs. As visitors step into the main exhibition hall, they are immersed in an underwater world, surrounded by thousands of unique and enigmatic marine species.
From sharks and rays to boxfish and pufferfish, including famous favorites like Nemo and the stunning green lobster, the modern glass aquariums offer a front-row view of the fascinating movements of these creatures.

A highlight of the institute is the large specimen display area, which houses the skeleton of a humpback whale measuring over 18 meters in length, weighing nearly 10 tons, and estimated to be over 200 years old. This is the first humpback whale skeleton in Vietnam to be reconstructed according to the original, leaving a lasting impression on all who behold it. Rare sea cow bones and giant oarfish skeletons further enrich this “giant within giants” collection, offering both scientific value and a visually stunning experience.
Additionally, the marine biodiversity section houses nearly 23,000 biological specimens belonging to over 5,000 species, a vast collection that showcases the richness and mystery of the Eastern Sea. It stands as a testament to the nation’s efforts in preserving and conserving its oceanic heritage.
