Seeking Love’s Blessings: A Distant Journey to Cleanse with New Year’s Well Water

Seeking Love’s Blessings: A Distant Journey to Cleanse with New Year’s Well Water

The Den Cung – Gieng Ngoc Temple in Bac Ninh province attracts a large number of locals and tourists seeking blessings on the final day of the Lunar New Year holiday.

Renowned for its refreshing outdoor well, legend has it that those who pray sincerely will receive blessings and have their wishes granted. Thus, every New Year, many visit to seek prosperity, love, and a year filled with peace and good fortune.

This ancient well, located within the temple grounds, draws water from Kim Linh Mountain. Its crescent shape covers approximately 20m², featuring 11 brick steps, 4 stone steps, and 1 wooden step made of lim timber near the water’s edge.

During the early spring days, due to high foot traffic, the brick steps can become slippery. The management provides high-friction flip-flops to ensure visitors’ safety.

Nguyen Linh, from Lang Son, shared that she researched Gieng Ngoc before visiting. Believing in the temple’s sacredness, she traveled here to pray for love at the beginning of the year.

“I washed my face with the well water, hoping for clarity in mind and heart to find a suitable partner this year,” Linh said.

Many visitors bring containers to collect water, even taking it home for bathing or sharing with family. The management advises against drinking the water directly, as three large “cá ông” fish live in the well, and recommends using it only for hand and face washing.

Despite this, some visitors drink the water directly from the well. One woman described it as sweet and refreshing.

Some female visitors splash water on their faces and heads, seeking enlightenment and clarity.

After visiting the sacred well, many young people draw fortune sticks, feeling optimistic about their romantic prospects for the new year.
