Even in winter, there are many types of vegetables that can be grown in pots and on balconies such as lettuce, spring onions, tomatoes, coriander, etc. Seeing them green, fresh and growing constantly feels amazing. For example, growing a pot of spring onions on the balcony is very convenient. You don’t have to go to the market or supermarket just to buy a few spring onions.
You can refer to the simplest ways to grow spring onions right below:
The first method: sowing seeds
Before sowing the small black seeds, you can soak them in warm water for 12 hours, remove the damaged and small seeds, only keep the big and healthy ones. Then put the soaked seeds in a clean damp cloth overnight. When the seeds start to crack, you can take them out to plant in pots.
Sow the cracked seeds into the pre-filled planting soil pot, then lightly bury the seeds under the soil layer, not too deep. Finally, water regularly about 3-4 times per week to help the seeds grow quickly into young plants and ready for harvest.
Although the germination speed is not very fast, as long as the temperature is suitable, the germination rate is quite high. Initially, it is thin and will grow faster in the later stage.
The second method: growing from bulbs
This method is simpler, more convenient, and faster to develop. After planting, you can usually eat it in one or two months.
First, add soil to the pot and water the soil completely. Then, use a knife to cut off part of the top of the purple onion bulb, about 1/4 of the bulb, to help the spring onions grow faster, and place the purple onion bulb in the pot soil, burying the bulb 1/2 deep into the soil.
Water regularly, keep the pot soil moist and loose, place it in a sunny place, it will grow leaves and shoots, the longer it grows, the better it is.
The third method: growing from roots
This is a simple method of growing onions, using cheap materials but with a high success rate. First, wash the onion roots, then plant them directly in the soil-filled pot.
Since the onion roots have already grown, there is no need to trim or manipulate the roots. Next, you just need to bury the roots in the soil, leaving a little bit of the top for the onion plant to continue growing.
Water the roots regularly to help them quickly adapt to the new growing conditions and sprout leaves.
