In recent days, adorable images of a baby hippopotamus have been circulating on social media, captivating the curiosity of many visitors to Hanoi Zoo.

In an interview with Tien Phong, Mr. Nguyen Cong Nghiep, Deputy General Director of Hanoi Zoological Gardens Company, shared: “In the past time, Hanoi Zoo has been home to three female hippopotamuses. On December 5, 2023, we received a female hippopotamus from Dai Nam Zoo. Since then, she has been under our careful care and has thrived. Excitingly, on July 23, 2024, she gave birth to an adorable baby hippopotamus.”

Currently, both the mother and baby hippopotamus are doing well and receiving round-the-clock care. The water level in their enclosure has been lowered to facilitate natural bonding and nursing between the two.

Additionally, the mother’s diet has been supplemented with nutritious meals rich in vitamins and minerals to ensure an ample supply of high-quality milk for the baby. Now, the baby hippopotamus is over three months old and thriving.

At present, the baby hippopotamus is nursing and has started transitioning to solid food.

Mr. Nghiep added that the baby hippopotamus is doing exceptionally well, and the company’s leadership plans to organize a contest to name the adorable calf soon.

The charming baby hippopotamus has captivated the interest of many Hanoi residents who have visited the zoo.
