Mulberry circles and fruits are both beneficial
In ancient times, the mulberry tree was used not just for its leaves to feed silkworms. The wood was also cut into small pieces and made into bracelets. These bracelets were believed to be a talisman, especially for the young, the elderly, the ill, and pregnant women.
It was said that wearing a mulberry wood bracelet could ward off evil spirits, especially when venturing out at night or traveling far from home. Even today, these bracelets remain popular and can be easily found for purchase. Many continue to view them as a protective charm, and some even cultivate mulberry trees solely for this purpose.
The fruits of the mulberry tree have a sweet and sour taste and are often made into syrups. They are praised for their nutritional value, containing various vitamins and antioxidants. Mulberry leaves are used medicinally, known for their antibacterial properties and their effectiveness in treating eye infections.
In folk belief, the mulberry tree is thought to possess the power to exorcise evil spirits. When someone is believed to be possessed, branches of the mulberry tree are used to drive out the evil entity.
Why planting mulberry trees may not be favorable
In the past, the mulberry tree was associated with strong yin energy. Planting it in front of a house was thought to increase the yin energy within the home. Additionally, the Chinese pronunciation of “tang shen” for “mulberry tree” sounded similar to “tang,” which evoked associations with funerals and misfortune. As a result, it was considered inauspicious to plant mulberry trees in front of one’s home.
Furthermore, in the context of traditional garden aesthetics, the mulberry tree was not considered a particularly attractive specimen and was typically only used for hedges.
However, with the development of bonsai art and the discovery of the mulberry wood’s flexibility, people began to shape and prune the trees to create unique shapes. The advantage of using mulberry wood for bonsai is its pliability, allowing gardeners to shape it to their liking. Additionally, the mulberry fruits can remain on the branches for extended periods, adding to the aesthetic appeal of the bonsai.
Today, the belief against planting mulberry trees in front of houses is not as strongly held, and those who appreciate bonsai may still choose to cultivate them as decorative pieces. Mulberry bracelets have also evolved, with some crafted from older mulberry wood and sold at higher prices. Meanwhile, simpler bracelets made from young mulberry branches continue to be used by expectant mothers and for children.
