Ms. Dinh Thi Chin, from Lap Vo District, came to the rural market with a friend after hearing about it from many people. After strolling around the market, she chose to indulge in white bean pudding, bánh xèo (Vietnamese savory pancakes), and ice cream tubes—all familiar dishes from her childhood. “The rural market on the island is so much fun, and the food and drinks are delicious, nutritious, and affordable,” Ms. Chin shared.
About 15 kilometers from the Tan Thuan Dong rural market, the Xom Ray rural market attracted nearly 10,000 visitors on the fourth day of the Lunar New Year. This market is located in Tan Nghia Commune, Cao Lanh District, surrounded by corn, chili, and bean fields. Some stalls also offered traditional folk games, adding to the festive atmosphere of the Lunar New Year celebrations.
Ms. Ngoc Trang, a resident of Cao Lanh City, donned a traditional “ba ba” outfit and explored the Xom Ray market with her friends on the first day of spring. She expressed her delight in the traditional cakes and the peaceful countryside setting. “I will definitely come back here again,” she said.
The Tan Thuan Dong rural market was established two years ago, while the Xom Ray rural market has been operating for almost three months, both held regularly on Saturday afternoons. When visiting Cao Lanh District north of the Tien River, tourists can not only enjoy the vegetable markets but also explore mango orchards and indulge in the specialty—Cao Lanh mangoes. The district is currently developing various agricultural tourism models centered around mangoes, including tours and homestays in the orchards.
According to the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, these rural markets in Dong Thap Province are attracting tourists while providing local farmers with direct sales opportunities for their agricultural products and regional specialties. The department is also working on plans to connect tours and promote these agricultural tourism products to visitors.
