A young male southern elephant seal, estimated to weigh around two tons, was spotted by surprised onlookers as it made its way through a suburban neighborhood. Animal welfare organizations and local residents were intrigued by the unusual visitor.
“Oh my, look at you! How on earth did you get here?” exclaimed a woman.
Police and local security companies attempted to contain the seal by parking their patrol cars around it. The massive creature rested its head on a car bonnet and half-climbed onto another before sliding off, crossing the road, and continuing onto the pavement.
It eventually stopped near a shopping center. Wildlife officials were concerned that it had ventured too far inland and might be exhausted or dehydrated. They estimated its weight at approximately 2 tons (4,400 pounds). Fully grown southern elephant seals can reach twice that size.
According to the SPCA Cape of Good Hope, the southern elephant seal is the largest seal species in the world and is typically found in sub-Antarctic regions, not in South Africa. However, occasionally, young male seals like this one end up on South Africa’s shores.
A team of wildlife experts and a city veterinarian tranquilized the seal and guided it into a specialized vehicle for transport back to its natural habitat in a nearby bay.
SPCA Cape of Good Hope later shared a video on social media showing the seal ambling along the beach and heading towards the ocean.
“Wildlife doesn’t always follow a script, and this seal’s unexpected journey into a residential area certainly caused concern,” said Belinda Abraham, a spokesperson for the local SPCA, in a statement. “With so many moving parts—traffic, curious onlookers, and a stressed marine giant—ensuring the safety of all involved required swift coordination and intense focus.”
While the seal appeared unharmed, its urban adventure posed risks to both the animal and road users. With the help of various authorities, the area was quickly cordoned off and traffic was managed, while specialized organizations took charge of the seal’s safe return.
SPCA monitored the seal’s well-being throughout the operation, including during the tranquilization process administered by a wildlife veterinarian and the challenging task of loading it into the city’s large animal transport vehicle.
By late afternoon, the seal had been cleared by the veterinarian and safely released at Koggel Bay. The team remained on site to monitor its recovery from anesthesia before departing.
