The stunning Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago have been recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark, celebrating their exceptional geological and geomorphological significance. This recognition highlights the unique beauty and scientific importance of these sites, offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of karst landscapes and their evolution.
Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago tell a story of tropical karst landscapes submerged by the sea. The area showcases all stages of this process, featuring three main types of caves: ancient marine grikes, ancient karst bedrock caves, and grikes. Ha Long Bay, in particular, represents the later stages of marine submersion, while Cat Ba Archipelago adds geological value with its continental and intertidal stage patterns.
This recognition by UNESCO is not the first for Ha Long Bay. In 1994, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site for its outstanding aesthetic value. Then, in 2000, it received another recognition from UNESCO for its global geological and geomorphological significance.
The latest inscription in September 2023, at the 45th session of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Committee, further cements the status of Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago as a globally significant geopark, the first inter-provincial geopark in Vietnam.
Ha Long Bay and Cat Ba Archipelago offer a unique and captivating insight into the Earth’s geological history, and this recognition ensures their protection and celebration for generations to come.
