Choosing High-Quality Dried Onions for Purchase

To store dried onions for an extended period, the first thing to consider is purchasing high-quality dried onions. Opt for older, firmer, plumper onions with dry, evenly sized skins. The outer layer should be dry and easy to peel off, indicating that the onion is mature and simple to peel.

Feel for any moisture or soft spots when holding the onion in your hand. Avoid onions that are soft, bruised, or show signs of sprouting.

Storing Dried Onions Using Mesh Bags or Baskets

The simplest method for storing dried onions is to use mesh bags or baskets to ensure adequate ventilation and prevent mold. Creating ventilation holes allows the onions to “breathe,” preventing them from rotting due to trapped moisture.

If mesh bags are unavailable, you can use a sparse basket to store the onions or hang them in a cool, dry place using a long string. Place the onions in a dark location, away from direct sunlight and high temperatures, as these conditions can cause the onions to shrivel.

Storing dried onions in a mesh bag and hanging them in a cool, dry place is the simplest method.

Even with careful storage, regularly check the onions and remove any that show signs of softening, discoloration, or spoilage to prevent mold and moisture from affecting the healthy onions.

Additionally, avoid using plastic bags or airtight containers, as moisture cannot escape, causing the onions to spoil quickly. Do not store dried onions with potatoes, as the moisture from the potatoes will cause the onions to become damp and rot. The potatoes may also absorb the onion’s flavor, resulting in an unusual taste when cooked.

Storing Peeled Dried Onions

For convenience, you may consider peeling the dried onions before storing them.

After thoroughly peeling and cleaning the dried onions, pat them dry. Then, place the whole peeled onions or chop them according to your needs (slicing or dicing) into a container and store them in the refrigerator’s crisper drawer. This method will keep the onions fresh for about 2-3 days.

For longer storage, freeze the onions. Frozen onions can be used for up to 1-3 months. To make it convenient, chop or slice the onions and place them in ziplock bags or airtight containers to prevent the onion’s smell from affecting other foods in the freezer.
